Dell Optiplex GX1

I have made no hardware or Bios changes in months but two odd problems have popped up in recent weeks.

1) For several days every time I tried to boot up I received a Error Message saying me C: (hard drive) could not be found. I removed the HD cable at both ends and cleaned the cable and pins. After doing that several time the Error Message went away and I could boot up without error.

2) Several weeks passed without an error but now I am getting the following: "Diskette drive 1 Seek failure". The error appears and then the boot up continues fine. The floppy drive also works fine. I have remove the cable from the driver to the mother board and cleaned both the cable and pins. I have also removed the power cable and cleaned the cable and the diskette pins but the error continues to show and then the boot up continues.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried replacing the battery on the motherboard?

You need a 3-V CR2032 lithium coin cell, this can be purchased from a Radio Shack, WalMart, or most pharmacies.

Also, try running Dell diagnostics extended test on the PC.

Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Guide, is HERE

The GX1 service manual is HERE

Note: There are four version of the GX1.

Hello Bev, I have replaced the battery (CR2032) with a new battery. I tested the voltage of new battery prior to installing it and it is 3.0VDC. I am still getting the error: "Diskette drive 1 seek failure". I have double checked, step by step, every BIOS setting and all is well. The Tag number is:

<ADMIN NOTE : Service tag removed per privacy policy>

I have changed nothing in this PC in years except the battery.

When I first got this Optiplex GX1 I did a lot of proper work on it and it ha preformed flawlessly for 4 years. I up-graded the CPU and now run at 1.3GHz and run with 768 RAM which was made in the USA. I have done the same up-grade on about 12 Optiplex GX1s and they are all running error free. The HD is a Seagate Baracuda 7200 / 10. The CPU runs cool using a 100% copper sink. The unit utilizes 5 fans two of which are dedicated to the CPU, 1 cools the RAM (which also use copper sinks) and 2 cool the unit. I have done everything I could think of and changed the battery knowing the battery which was being used was OK.

I get the Error but it only lasts a few seconds and then the unit boots-up and runs fine. Now what?

Tom, i am sure you may have heard this one but when e'thing seems to be in its place , clean system, updated and clean connections, etc,etc.........this may do the trick:

Whatever your operating system is , 95, 2000,XP ........whichever...................install your "reinstallation disk" and do just that , of course saving all of your files, not a complete format of hd................just re-install operating system..........John

IF ITS SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT AFFECT THE OPERATIONAL QUALITIES OF YOUR PC.........AND YOU CAN STAND IT.......LEAVE IT BE, SOMETIMES THINGS CAN BE NUDGED INTO A PROBLEM.........MY PC IS 7.4 YEARS OLD WITH MINIMAL UPGRADES.........AS LONG AS IT DOES THE JOB EVERYDAY...............I DO NOT CARE IF IT BREAKS WIND WHEN I START IT UP.............................AS LONG AS IT RUNS EFFECIENTLY , I AM HAPPY, J
