Dell Optiplex XE not booting
Hi All,
We have a Dell Optiplex XE on a machine. Last week the computer stopped booting. When looking at the error lights Lights 1 and 3 are flashing.
I then turned off the power supply and disconnected the HDD then when turning on the PC it booted up(up until saying no os installed). I then reconnected the HDD and the error lights came back on. I then suspected the HDD was faulty and installed a new HDD and the light came back on, tried without the HDD and the PC booted. I then decided to connect the HDD to a seperate power supply with the sata connected and the computer booted into windows fine. The only time the computer does not boot with a HDD plugged in. I suspect the Power supply is faulty. but my technician decided to double check and according to him when the follows the test procedure with the button on the power supply he concludes that the motherboard is Faulty. I even tried booting without sata cable connected and the PC would not boot as long as a HDD is plugged into the power connector.
Please can someone assist on what the problem could be?

Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum.
With 1 and 3 lights on it indicates that the system has detected the memory modules but then there is configuration or compatibility error.So I would suggest you to remove the memory modules from the system and then turn on the system.
If the system has 2 memory modules then I would suggest you to try turning on the system with just one memory module at a time to isolate the faulty one.I would suggest you to provide the service tag of the system via private message so that I can look into the specifications of the system .

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for your reply but i find it hard to believe it is a faulty memory module. As the the motherboard will successfully post and will then say it cannot find an os if there is no hdd connected. There is only one memory module. I will send you the service tag tomorrow when I am back at work.
