Dell XPS 8300 power supply connectors for video card

I have a XPS 8300and I am presently using a AMD Radeon 6450 graphics card and would like to upgrade to a Radeon 6770 card. I would like some suggestions for the 6770 card. I would also like to know what power connector will I have available for the graphics card from the power supply. I have talked to dell support about the available power supply  connectors and one tech said that there was a 4 pin connector available but another tech said that there were two 3 pin connectors from the power supply. I have looked at several cards such as XFX HD77XZNLC AT IRadeon HD 6770. It seems that they require a 6pin connector. I would appreciate some help

There are multiple versions of power supply for the XPS 8300.  If you did not purchase a High end card it is EXTREMELY LIKELY that you must update your power supply to add a 6770. The models that come with this card have a 460W power supply.

Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedPSU for a list of Certified products

Corsair TX850 V2 for example.

If you got a low end model you also got the low end power supply.

I have an XPS8300 also. I recently opened mine up to see what I had for possibilities in power connectors. What I found was that there are absolutely NO 4-pin MOLEX connectors, they are all SATA (like you would use for disc and hard-drives). You can purchase Sata to Molex adapters though, which is what I will be doing for a USB 3.0 PCI card that i will be getting.

The power supply port in the card should look like this.

My XPS 8300 has a yellow cable that branches into two. The ends of this cable both fit into here, so I guess I could accomodate a 6950.

I was under the impressional all the XPS 8300's had the same power supply (only ever looked at mine properly so can't be sure). Anyway power down your system and remove the AC cord, have a look to see if you can find this cable. The end(s) of the cables looked like this:

Curious... I have an XPS 8300 with a 460 watt power supply and I'd also like to upgrade my video card to a GForce - GTX 560 and wonder if it'd work without getting a whole new PSU?  The 560 recommends a 520 watt supply, but I've heard that the 460watt stock unit is typically under rated and capable of more power output than stated.  The stock PSU also has two 6 pin terminals free, but I don't know how taxed it already is with my current configuration.

I'm running the stock 1tb hdd and dvd, along with a 120gb SSD and a 2tb SATA2 drive, taking all 4 sata power outlets.  The only things that I'd consider getting after that is possibly a PCI tv tuner if I can find one I believe actually works.

Thanks in advance.

Jim

Dell does under rate their power supplies. I have a Studeo XPS that has a 475 watt power supply, it actually tests out at a steady 513 so thats a 38 watt plus. If that holds true with your 460 watt supply you would need a bigger power supply for that card plus you have the computer pretty loaded now. We just installed a 750 watt power supply in my Grandsons computer and paid $109.
