Dimension 2400 boot errors after Memory Upgrade
Hello all - I recently tried to upgrade my Dimension 2400 to 2GB of RAM. I checked the specs and this machine does support up to 2GB.
I also double checked to make sure that the RAM I have purchased is correct for this system (Two 1GB sticks of DDR400 RAM, PC-3200).
When the new sticks are installed, the PC won't boot up - it gives a series of error beeps and will not proceed with booting up.
When the original sticks (2 x 512MB) are placed back in, the PC works as usual.
I also tried one of the original 512MB sticks and one of the new 1GB sticks, and it won't boot that way either.
I am familiar with how to replace RAM and did check to make sure that the new RAM sticks were seated properly.
What do I need to do to make this work?

jgorst,
The specifications page states that the only DDR SDRAM memory supported is -
PC2100 (266-MHz)
PC2700 (333-MHz)

The Dimension 2400 will use 2 GB of memory, but its memory controller will only accept "low density" memory. I can never get the details straight, but it has to do with the way the memory is laid out in terms of rows and columns. Much of the low cost SDRAM memory is now "high density". I would suggest you see if you can return the memory you have and go to a memory vendor such as Crucial or Kingston and order the memory they recommend. Both www.crucial.com and www.kingston.com have memory "configurators" that will provide the part numbers you need, and both companys will guarantee that the memory they sell you will work or refund your payment.
