Dimension 4550 Power Supply Upgrade
I want to upgrade my Dell Dimension 4550 PSU to a 400Wor 500W version to enable me to upgrade Graphics Card.
Can anyone advise on compatible UK available model. I have found PPCS500D listed but cannot find UK supplier.
I'm not clear whether the PSU is proprietary or whether other off the shelf models will fit case, motherboard and cabling?
Any help/contacts welcome.

Any standard ATX power supply lacking an on/off switch at the back will fit.

That's not the situation. On the Dimension 4550, the position of the Power Connector and fan are reversed from the ATX standard.
PC Power and Cooling has a different model that will fit the Dimension 4550. You need their Part Number: S41D2.
It is a 420 watt unit that literally will just snap right into the Dimension 4550 stock case.

In 2005, I pieced back together a stripped-down 4550. The only proprietary parts were the heat sink and and CPU fan shroud; I sourced a standard ATX power supply (without the rear power switch) from Newegg and it worked fine. After the 4550's mainboard was fatally damaged (by being kicked over while running), I moved the parts, including power supply, into a generic build. Said power supply worked fine with the ASRock board.

The mounting holes for the Power Supply are standard.
You need to buy right angle Tin Snips and Hack a hole in the rear about the size of your Fist
to get a standard PSU in. You start at the fan grill and cut across to the power plug area then down and across then back
to the fan grill roughly a Large Rectangular hole.
Done this with GX260, 280, Dimension 4300,4500, 4550 etc.
I tend to use Antec True PowerII or True Power Trio 550W or better.
Antec EARTHWATTS series do not work at all so dont try those.
BFG and Corsair also make workable units.
Tin Snips or Right angle Nibbler tool will do the job.
