The 5150/E510 does not use a Dell proprietary power supply, you can use most standard generic ATX power supplies with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector and two SATA power connectors, this can be purchased from most local, or online computer stores.
As this system has an open back panel, a power supply with or without the on/off switch can be used.
I've tried replacing the PSU in my old 5150 before.
You might not realize just by looking at it, but the stock Dell PSU is a lot taller (100mm) than a standard ATX PSU (80mm~87mm). The holes in the chasis used to secure the PSU do not line up with a standard ATX PSU as well.
The kicker is, I recently purchased a Studio XPS 435T, a GTX295 and a Corsair HX620 to power the system and found that the stock power supply dimensions were identical to the one in the 5150!
At least the two mounting holes at the top of the chasis were aligned with the new PSU, but there's an rectangular gap about 15mm high and 150mm wide beneath it.

thought this may be useful to anyone looking to change the PSU in a 5150.
My Dell PSU went dead after nearly 4 years. I bought a Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus 390W to replace it. Everything works fine except the following:
1. the SATA connector is taller than the one found on DELL PSU, so the side panel won't close properly unless press against the connector and bend the cable
2. it is held in position only by the 4 screws at the back. it won't fits the cut out slots on the casing
it has a different FDD connector from the DELL.

I have used an Antec Tru Power Trio 550 watt, Standard ATX power supply in my Dimension E510. It fits perfectly. There is some issue with the power connectors but I didn't have any problems with mine and the cover closed without problems. I have two hard drives installed in my E510.
