Dimension 8200 won't boot after CPU upgrade.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 8200 2.26 ghz P4 with 768mb RDRAM.

I tried upgrading it to a 2.8ghz / 533 SL7E2 P4 to no avail. The fans work and I can hear the HDD spinning up, but the BIOS won't load.

I've tried resetting the CMOS & Flashing the BIOS. I don't have enough repeaters so I can't try booting with one stick of RAM.

It still boots just fine with the old CPU after my attempted upgrade, I have no idea why it's not working; please help.

The Dimension 8200 does not support 1mb cache processors, you need a P4, Socket 478, 2.80GHz, 400MHz FSB, 512K.

If the PC has an 850e chipset [shipped after May, 2001], you can go to a 3.06, 533MHz FSB, 512K processor.

ERGH!

Thank you, I thought that I'd done all the necessary research for the upgrade. Back to the drawing board.

On a related note, anybody want to buy a 2.8ghz Intel P4?

I just knew it was going to be something stupidly simple like that too! On the upside I just found a 3.06 P4 for under $96 on eBay. :)

Before buying 3.06 P4, make certain that your motherboard is compatible.

The 8200 motherboard, part # 1T751 and 3T622 have the 850E chipset and 533MHz FSB, and part # 7G535 and 8G894 motherboards have the 850 chipset and 400MHz FSB.

Also, give the discussion HERE a read, especially the part about the memory.

The P4 3.06GHz SL6S5 processor looks good and should be compatible.
