Dimension XPS D300 power supply

I just tried to upgrade the mother board in my dell dimension xps d300, and thanks to Dell's proprietary (non-standard) ATX design I fried the both the motherboard and the power supply. Dell's ATX is different from the standard ATX because of its pinout, it has the same design, and will fit in a standard ATX port. But when you turn it on...boom... Your computer is toast. I am very angry because Dell didn't even change the design, just the pinout. The only reason to do that is to make you buy dell upgrades, and if you don't, you are going to need a new PC.

Hi John Mortimore,

Sorry to hear you've had a problem with your Dimension. Dell went to standard PSU and motherboard configurations many years ago, but the proprietary power supply issue among those very old Dimension models is well documented. The ATX standard was not released until 2007, many years after your XPS d300 was sold.

The good news is that you could update to a much more recent vintage PC for not much more than the cost of that power supply, and keep your existing hard drive and data.

Is there anywhere I can get a replacement power supply for the dimention xps d300 (the motherboard I destroyed was from a gateway computer)? Would other dell power supplies with the same model number(PS-5201-1D) work?

The Dimension XPS D Series requires a proprietary power supply, check eBay here:

I purchased a power supply from a dell dimension XPS D266 on eBay, it came in the mail today and works fine with my D300 motherboard.
