Do I have a Bios Issue? Trying to install new mouse...
Hi
I have Dell Dimension XPS D333 which is running Win XP (SP2) and the Bios I currently have installed is A07 dated fron 1988(!).
I have been trying to upgrade my mouse to a fancy optical one, (A4 Tech Optical 3d Mouse) using the drivers they provide but without any sucess.
One thing that I have noticed is that when I have the optical mouse plugged in, the VERY FIRST boot sreen (black with white text) does not print the line "mouse initialised" as it would normally do, which leads me to believe that although the drivers may be correctly installed, the PC is just not aknowledging the presence of the new mouse.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether upgrading the bios to A08 would help me at all? After reading the advice at the top message of this board from Les, I dont want to upgrade it without due reason.
Thanks for your help in this matter - it may sound trivial but it would be nice to solve!

In looking over the file descriptions of the BIOS upgrades for the XPS D model I see nothing in BIOS versions A08 and A09 that would have had any fixes or improvements with USB devices. I also see no setting in the BIOS Setup options for USB hardware that might have to be enabled for use with the mouse.
At this point I would suggest you post your problem over in the Dimension - Keyboard/Mouse forum to see what additional ideas maybe suggested. I would also check out the mouse manufacturer's web site to see if they have any FAQs in their tech support section related to installing the mouse on an older computer system.

I should have mentioned it is a PS/2 mouse but I guess this wont make any difference.
