Dreaded ntoskrnl.exe problem with windows vista reinstall
Recently my computers hard drive died so I replaced it with a Western Digital 1TB. The reinstall went well until the Service Pack 1 update. It went through the entire install and the computer hung on the 100% screen then it said that the install failed. When the computer went to revert back I got the dreaded ntoskrnl.exe error.
I've never had this problem on the previous HD install. The computer updates no problem except for Service Pack 1.To make matters worse, my norton antivirus won't install because I get the compatibility issue error because SP1 isn't installed.
Any and all help appreciated.

Hi clownshoes2,
There is Service pack 2 version available for Windows Vista operating system. Please refer to the link below to download the Windows Vista Service pack 2. Please reinstall the operating system on the computer and install the Service pack 2 on the computer instead of installing Service pack 1.

You do know that you CANNOT install Service Pack 2 ahead of Service Pack 1.

You might try a clean install of Vista followed by immediate application of SP1 followed by SP2.
Standalone offline versions of both service packs should be available from Microsoft's download center.
