Either way will work. Adding a PCI card won't pose any problems at all with Windows XP. It will just recognize the extra card and let you extend your desktop.
I'm going through the same dilemma but I'm going to toss my MX420 card and replace it with a FX5200. The fewer different drivers I have to load, and less hardware, the better IMO (keep it simple). I could probably even sell my MX420 card for a few bucks.
Any of the new nVidia cards have excellent drivers for managing multi-monitors, so I can do it all with one FX5200.

Similar Question to Above:
Running an 18 month old Dimension 2300 512 RAM 1.7 mHz and wanting to use multiple monitors option, instead of just extend desktop option.
What video card should I buy to replace the OEM video card, and
what hardware/connectors/converters/cables, etc. will i have to buy in
addition to the new video card?
Looking for ease of installation as an overriding consideration.
Thanks!
