E521 BIOS

Does anybody know why they removed the 1.1.5 BIOS from the Downloads?

The update process(through windows, not dos) was frying motherboards. Scroll through a few more pages here to see.

Replaced with a later or earlier bios? Sometimes problems arise and Dell will remove a bios update and revert to earlier version.

But that happens no matter what BIOS people were updating to. They do not pay attention. I had no problem updating to 1.1.5, that is why I ask. The best way to update the BIOS in a Dell is to call their so called Tech support and have them walk you through it. Then if it fails it is their problem. I can not remember what the 1.1.5 changed but I do know it stopped the boot up hang ups.

This is what I found out.
1.1.5 was pulled because of frying motherboards (after about a week of release)
1.1.4 is now optional (for Vista upgrade)
1.0.3 is what I have on mine, system purchased Nov 06

This is what I discovered in peparing for Vista upgrade on my E521

Somehow the problem persists in E521's with BIOS version 1.1.6... Or that is what I am encountering every time I have to reboot my pc...

Even the tips to disable USB devices in BIOS didn't really help, since the hang ups occur either during booting the BIOS or the first steps in booting Vista... Anyone with a clue?

I have a new (Feb/07) e521 w/1.1.4 BIOS with a POST fail with lights 234 meaning a USB fault,  from the start. Several hours of chat & on site tech have not fixed the problem that takes 2 starts to get past the USB POST to the start the PC into Windows. The newly posted Bios 1.1.8 text indicates it might fix this, but guess what, the Dell link is dead.

Dell: Please tell your phone & chat techs how to fix this USB start problem (we have tried everything-disabled all USB ports except one for the KB/mouse, tried new KB) and if the 1.1.8 fixes it, fix the link!!!!

As of today. 4/30/07, the link to Download Bios Ver 1.1.8 is alive. Anybody tried it? I aranged for a new MB just in case, before I flash the Bios, though I did sucessfully flash the predessor 1.1.4.

I did. It took a long time for it to do its thing. There is no problem if you FOLLOW DIRECTIONS and wait until the program does its job. I think most of these MB failures are self inflicted. IE, like trying to upgrade with your USB stuff still plugged in. Or not waiting long enough or your AV still running. You know simple stuff like Following Directions. It is not hard.

Actually you are wrong, flyer. Motherboards were frying through no fault of the user. The very update you did fixed a known bug when trying to update earlier bios versions with windows.

I'm still having problems with the boot every other time issue.
I'm on BIOS 1.1.8 now but no difference still.
I'm fairly sure it's related to the issues I'm having with my TEAC Memory card
reader failing to register half the time as well.

Dell fixed their Ver 1.1.8 site & it downloaded & installed sucessfully in my new E521 over Ver 1.1.4. The result is my reported USB Boot POST problem "almost fixed". The PC will now boot ok with printer, KB/Mouse, Scanner connected to USB ports, and the BIOS configured to remove all USB devices from the Boot Device sequence and all USB-HDD, ISB FDD USB CRRom disabled. Even with this configuration, boot POST still hangs with progress bar 1/2 way however, with a "powered on" external USB Hard drive. That must be off at boot but can be powered on after windows starts.

Not good quality Dell and this long time user is disappointed that the PC did not "Work Out of the Box". Expecting a user to download a new Bios on a new PC to get it to boot is unacceptable.
