Enable VT on 745 for 64 bit virtual machines

I've been trying to create a 64 bit Virtual server on my 64 bit workstation and am getting an error saying that 64-bit guest operating systems are not supported by this host and will not run.

I know it's possible to enable VT in the BIOS on the GX620 but can't find where to do it on the 745. Does the 745 support Intel(R) Virtualization Technology?

Thanks in advance

What OS are you running? I believe you need a 64-bit capable processor (which the 745 has as I don't think you can buy a processor that cannot do this), a bios that allows this (which the 745 does as far as I know), but also an OS that's 64-bit (e.g. XP x64).

I'm running 64 bit XP Pro. I've been through the BIOS and can't find the option to enable VT like there is on the 620. Is it enabled by default now?

I ran the Intel CPU ID utility and it came back saying that Intel Virtual Technology was not supported on this processor. I though it might be a setting that needs to be enabled or something along those lines.

Which processor model do you have? VT isn't the same as 64 bit extensions. It's possible your processor has 64 bit extensions, but no actual VT capabilities.

It's the Intel Pentium D 3.4GHz. I'm having some trouble with the Intel CPU ID software so don't have all the info. I think I it was an LGA775...

The Pentium Ds that ship with 745s by default do not support VT. You probably have the 945. 9x0 CPUs have VT, not 9x5 ones.

950 supports VT, 945 doesn't.

Well what about this then:

http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/products/desktop/processor/processors/pentium-d/feature/index.htm

claims all the 9xx Pentium D's support virtualization, is it a chipset issue?

Hi cdmiller,

Not all Pentium D support VT Technology.
Look the correct technical specification at:

Pages 13 and 14.

Best Regards,

Huh, so is this like the old 486sx vs 486dx, where the floating point unit was not functional in some chips and simply sold as the sx line? All the initial Intel marketing info indicated the Presler chips would have virtualization...

A DELL question, if I slap a VT capable Prelser chip into the Optiplex 745 on my office desk, like a Pentium D Presler 930, will the BIOS option for enabling virtualization appear?

Thanks,

- cameron

Hi Cameron,

Now I'm using OptiPlex GX620 - BIOS A11 (*).
Since I don't have any new 745 here to do some tests, unfortunately I can't support you with this OptiPlex version.

Best Regards,
