Freeze on boot with USB devices plugged in

For the last few days, I have been unable to boot into Vista because my computer freezes when any of my USB devices are plugged in during the bootup. I will get to the BIOS/Dell screen when the computer freezes although the lights and fans on my XPS 720 continue to run. When I try booting without any USB devices plugged in I get a keyboard failure and then boot into Vista where I can reconnect the USB devices and then use them normally. If I try to reconnect any USB device during bootup, the computer immediately freezes and does not continue booting upon disconnecting the USB device.

This is beginning to get really frustrating and I am wondering what may be causing this problem.

I have tried a system restore to no avail. I've tried reinstalling the drivers for my USB devices without success.

If anyone else knows of or has this problem, please post suggestions/solutions because this is really getting on my nerves.

Thanks for any help.

The issue you are having is a post issue. This can be cause by a bios setting out of place, a weak battery or possible bad motherbord or even a bad USB jack.

So I would examine all your usb ports look for bent pins and such.

Boot into the bios and check that the usb boot option is turned off.

While you are in the bios I would note all the current settings, one of the best ways is you use a digital camera and take a pix of each screen.

Try Unplugging the system. Press and hold the power button for about 20 secs. Only plug in the keyboard and mouse as your only two usb devices. see if it will now post.

Another thing would be to try a Cmos reset. If your using a Raid config this can get a bit tricky as you will reset all your bios setting to the default condition and this would wipe out your Raid array, If not then you will have no problems.

You can find the CMOS RESET here

Bios default setting are HERE

See if any of this will help and report back.

I tried all of the above (with the exception of accessing the BIOS because I can't use my keyboard or plug it in during the boot without it freezing) with no success.

USB ports all look fine- I tried a 2nd keyboard in multiple ports with no success.

Unplugging the system and holding the power button didn't work.

CMOS reset changed nothing upon booting with USB devices plugged in.

Re-installed the BIOS (ver. AO6) from Dell's driver page and nothing changed.

Because this problem is out of the blue and I have not touched the BIOS settings for several months, I doubt that this has anything to do with the usb boot option (although I could be wrong).

Any further assistence will be greatly appreciated.
