GX1 or GX110?

Question

I am totally lost. My daughter was given a GX1 and (2) GX110 which had parts missing out of each. One complete system can be made from the 3.

I believe I have this right…
The GX1 is 550MHz with 512 L2 cache
Don't know what this means – BIOS A10

The GX110 is 667MHz with 256 cache (don't know if that means L2)
Don't know what this means – BIOS A02

Does the L2 cache mean much?

Which system should I make complete? Would I be able to play any current games on it?

There wasn't any ram in any machine, so I know that I have to buy ram. I had to borrow from a friend just to start each one up. the GX110 only has to ram slots, what is the largest size ram that I can put in it?

The ram that works in the GX1 is exactly the same as the ram that works in the GX110 EXCEPT that the GX110 does not support ECC whereas the GX1 does.

The GX1 has 3 memory slots for a max of 768 megs ram. (you cant really use more than 512 unless you go to NT/2000/XP WIN9X doesnt like more than 512.

THe GX110 maxes out at 512 megs ram.

You need 256 meg Low density NON ECC NON REGISTERED PC100 SDRAM.

The GX110 has 133mhz FSB for the CPU so in some cases it will be a bit faster than the GX1.

Either system needs a GEFORCE FX5500 PCI video card from PNY or similar in order to run current games. The Onboard video for both is limited and not designed for games and will not run most new games.

The parts are not interchangeable for the RISER. However the Power supply and hard drive and floppy drive and most other things about it are interchangeable.

You can get a complete working GX1 or GX110 for under $100. The GX110 tends to be more upgradeable due to 133mhz fsb cpu support. Either is a useable system up to windows XP when the appropriate hardware is added. Also the GX110 tends to have Soundmax PCI audio which is faster than ISA Crystal audio on the GX1. The GX1 would need a PCI sound card to run modern games.

So, the GX110 doesn't need a sound card?

I'm really lost on the RAM. I don't know how to find LOW DENSITY 16 x 8 chipset INTEL 440BX/810E.

Can I get you to point me to a web site where I can find the ram?

To find compatible memory, you can use a memory configurator. Dell has one, but Crucial, Kingston and a few others also have one. A memory configurator allows you to selec the brand of the computer, then the range and finally the model and it will show you compatible memory.

Easier Method. Get Ram that is Guaranteed to Work in the GX110. If it does it WILL ALWAYS work in the GX1. The reverse is not true due to GX1 supporting ECC RAM.

Sorry for being so dense about this… how can I tell if I need a sound card on the GX110? If I do need one, what is the cheapest that I can get by with?

Onboard sound has audio jacks on the back. Cheapest Good Card is $9 or less based on
PCI CMI8738 chipset. Sells in the $15 to $29 range retail.

The audio ports have no holes if the sound is not onboard. The GX1 and GX110 boards have ports and connectors in exactly the same places. If there arent 3 mini plug holes by the lan connection it doesnt have onboard sound. RED is MIC, Green Is speaker out, BLUE is LINE IN

Memoryx tends to be cheaper than Crucial.
