GX270 chassis vibrates causing a continuous pulsing hum tone.
I thought the fan drawing air from the cpu was causing a constant vibration that manifests itself as an audible hum at an annoying pitch. However, I just unplugged the fan from the mboard and booted up and the hum is still there. I think it may be the hard drives but it's annoying that theres something in the case that's amplifying the hum. Is this a known problem and can anything be done? I've only had the PC for a week or 2 and it's driving me mad.
Its a gx270, Mini tower 2.8 P4 without hyperthreading.
Cheers,

Hi. Tried disconnecting both opticals. Same hum/vibration. Disconnected both hard drives - very fient hum (vibration from cpu fan?) that is not a problem. With hard drives powered up again hum returns. It's a pulsing tone that sustains for about 4 seconds before fading a little then ramping again. Continuously.
I've seated the drives on the green plastic rails with rubber grommets but this hasn't helped. It's something inside the case that's creating the hum due to the hard drive vibrations. As to what it is I don't know - i wondered if the case is a bad fit and the screening sheets are vibrating. A friend had a GX270 from the same batch as mine and his doesn't have the same "feature". I doubt this would warrant a support call?
Cheers.

"Could be the GPU fan. They get noizy before they die. Same with the power supply fan. "
Onboard Intel video with no fan/heatink - but good try. The PSU fan is actually quite quiet but the CPU fan seems to go crazy for no apparent reason - like when coming out of a basic windows screensaver??!! Go figure.
This sounds more like it. It's the Western Digital 40GB disk. I've got an email thread running withe Dell support right now and had to go through a long-winded process to isolate the noise. The humming is definately hard drive related.
CHeers.
