HD4850 Driver - Unable to install

I have an XPS 435T with an HD4850 video card.  I need to re-install the ATI driver and am getting continuing errors.  If I try to install the one from Dell for my system, I get an error during install:

-DRIVER INSTALL: the INF file not found

If I try to install and use the latest version of ATI video drivers, I get continuing BSOD's caused by the amdkmdap file (seems common according to google).

I am stumped at this point.  I was going to upgrade my video card soon, but would like to be able to limp along til then with this card and appropriate drivers.  Everything on my system is still stock.

* Download/Install the latest Microsoft .NET Framework
* Restart the PC when done
* Disable Microsoft Security Essentials or any other Anti-Virus Real-Time Scanning
* Close the ATI taskbar icon (if present)
* Click Control Panel- Programs and Features
* Select ATI Catalyst Install Manager
* Uninstall the drivers and CCC (Catalyst Control Center)
* Restart the PC when done
* The Microsoft default driver might load. That is fine or just click cancel to new hardware found
* Be sure all old CCC Start-Menu Icons are removed or deleted
* Be sure this folder is deleted: C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies
* Download, install, and run Driver Sweeper
- Select ATI Display and click the Clean button
* Restart the PC when done
* When it comes up this time:
Aero might be off
Main Monitor drivers or profile might be missing
Resolution is not set (make due for now)
* Run Driver Sweeper again to check (ATI Display - Analyze, should list nothing)
* Restart the PC when done (so install starts on a fresh boot)
* Disable Microsoft Security Essentials or any other Anti-Virus Real-Time Scanning
* Download and install the latest AMD Ati driver from our File Library (You can try the retail driver but if we are troubleshooting, we will insist you load ours)
* Restart the PC when done
* Monitor and proper resolution should be detectable now

Thank you very much for the detailed response.  I only have one question.  The ATI driver available for my system (using my service tag) is from 2009.  Is that the one I should use?

I installed the driver I got from Dell and got the following: Driver Install: the INF file was not found

So, dead in the water still.

I have an HD4850.  I use the drivers from the AMD (ATI) site.  Click Me
