How do I get to record from stereo mixer?

I have a Dell XPS 400 with windows XP and I know that the Sigma Tel audio card and driver will not allow you to "record what you hear".
What kind of sound card do I need so I am able to record what I hear? I'd like to spend as little as possible, nothing fancy, just plain 2 channel CD quality stereo audio.
I output to my PC speakers and stereo, currently with the card I have a have to use a y-splitter since there's only one line out sound output. But the main problem is not being able to record what you hear, how could Dell leave out something so basic? What we they thinking? Maybe the RIAA pressured them...:smileymad:
I dont care if installing another sound card would de-activate the front 2 jacks.
I see soundcards selling for less than $20, will these be good enough? I assume I'd just install it one of the PCI slots in the back.

An Audigy SE card, about $30 will do it.  I have one installed in an older XP machine and it works OK.  As noted you won't get the front panel headphone/mic connections.

Thanks, I'll try that.

All,

So this fix only allowed recording, you still cannot hear it while recording, correct?

* Click Start- Run
* Type regedit
* Click OK
* Highlight My Computer
* Click Edit- Find
* Type EnableInputMonitor
* Click Find Next
* Double-click the EnableInputMonitor entry. It will come up as 0000 00. Change the 00 to 01 (so it's 0000 01)
* Do a Find Next just to make sure it is the only EnableInputMonitor registry setting on your system
* Exit the Registry Editor and Restart the PC
* Right-click the little Sigmatel Icon and select Playback Devices
* Click Speakers/Headphones and then Properties
* Under the Levels tab, there is now a new option called Input Monitor, which is muted. Click the speaker to unmute to Input Monitor

Chris, I think he is referring to recording streaming audio, not from line in.

"Stereo Mix" or "what u hear" still does not work in Vista. It doesn't show up, even if you show all in audio setup.

Dell promised it would release a new audio driver with this function included. It still has not.
