How to enable onboard GPU and discrete GPU at the same time?
Hey I have a Inspiron 3847 and am trying to use the integrated and a discrete GPU at the same time in order to run 3 monitors. Is this possible?
Inspiron 3847
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4440 CPU @ 3.10GHz
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Tony,
None, that I know of, except either installing a second PCIe x1video card, or a PCIe x16 card that supports three monitors.
The Inspiron 3847 Mini Tower has 2 x PCIe x1 and I x PCIe x16 slots

There are DVI Y Splitters available, but you need check these out, to be certain are what you want

No, when a discrete PCIe x 16 video card is installed, the integrated graphics are automatically disabled.

Thanks Bev!
Is there any kind of work around or a GPU that you know of that will work with the 3847 and support 3+ monitors?

I just found a BIOS change that's been recently given by Dell for the Inspiron 3847, regards to using two monitors.
I have no comments about it's viability, but it may be worth a try.
"According to my documentation, there actually is a 'multi-display' option on this unit.
This allows for the onboard card to work with an add-in video card in the PCI-E slot.
Please go into the BIOS then go to the 'Advanced' tab.
Expand 'Onboard Device Configuration' then enable 'Intel Multi-Display'."
Unfortunately Dell has not yet published any details of the Inspiron 3847 BIOS setup.

Bev.,
I tried doing that last week and it causes both GPUs to to give a black screen. The only thing that is visible is when the computer starts up and the "DELL" logo is displayed and after that you can see the mouse pointer on the black screen. So, I'm not really sure if there is something else that is supposed to go with selecting 'multi-display'.

Sorry, I don't know any more details, except other that the ones I posted, as I already noted, because Dell has not published them.
Sounds like at this time, using a video card that supports multi monitors, is the procedure to use.
I have raised with Dell the issue, about the missing BIOS details!
