How to get the side mouse buttons to work

Hello.

I just received a Dell XPS 8500, service tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>.  There is a side button on the mouse that I want to program to use as a double-click button.  Is there a way to do this?  I also connected an older microsoft intellipoint mouse and I downloaded the microsoft software and I could not get the side buttons for it to work either.  The microsoft software does not recognize the dell mouse so I can't use that software to program the dell mouse side button.

Thanks for your help.

I think the mouse says LZ301BK0C4P.  The order says it is number 6BTNLM.  BTW, I noticed it is a 6 button mouse.  The scroll wheel works and the other center button seems to change the response of the pointer.  The two buttons on each side do not seem to do any thing.
