How to reset the CMOS on XPS 420?
A few questions about my XPS 420:
1. What is my motherboard Chipset (X38?)
2. Who is the manufacturer of the motherboard?
3. How do I reset my CMOS prior to adding new technology hardware? Details please? Does this process of resetting CMOS change my (few, limited) settings in the bios to the default settings?
4. What are the disadvantages to doing this cold CMOS reset? Are there any negative potential consequences?
5. I assume this means taking out the coin shaped battery and then doing what with the battery?
6. Will my bios version remain the same?

3. Resetting CMOS .. Yes Resetting the CMOS will reset your bios to default settings.
4. There are no advantages to resetting the CMOS unless you are having a hardware conflict. Otherwise you should really let it be.I would not even do it when adding in new video cards or such.
5. No resetting your bios involves using a jumper. see # 3
6. Yes you version will remain the same.

Although you may have a jumper on the motherboard that will reset the BIOS (CMOS Memory) taking out the battery for about 10 minutes will reset it. Resetting the BIOS will not change the BIOS version. When you reset it, the BIOS goes back to the factory default settings, if you have custom settings in the BIOS you will need to reset those. Generally, a BIOS reset is not needed for hardware changes.
The motherboard is a custom board manufactured to Dell spec's. It's not a stock ATX motherboard.
The chipset is Intel® X38 Express Chipset/ ICH9R according to the Dell manual (there is a copy of the Dell manual on your hard drive).

My thanks to both responders.
As for the chipset, I have previously had a hard drive crash (lost Windows Vista install and all data) and lost any trace of Dell on my hard drive. I purchased 2 new hard drives and installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit which runs well. I let Windows 7 install all the drivers with the exception of the video driver. Instead I got the latest ATI Video driver from the ATI website. System runs great now. I just want to be sure I have everything I need for the OCZ SSD installation Friday.
Should I install chipset drivers for this motherboard?
I'm putting in an OCZ Vertex 2 180 SSD tomorrow and want the latest Intel Chipset drivers for the other drives.
