Inspiron 3847, Realtek ALC3600 CG, Rotten sound
I have a set of older Dell 5650 (5.1) speakers hooked up to my new Dell 3847 computer using just the integrated sound ports. My problem is the sound is terrible. It sounds heavily "canned," almost like the sound is coming from the room down below. Is there any way to equalize the sound on an integrated sound system, or maybe an updated codec I could use to improve the sound? It's actually so bad I just use and old computer to listen to streaming music. Thanks.

The Inspiron 3000 3847 entry level desktop computer uses the onboard Realtek ALC3600 CG audio codec. You could look at the Realtek website and see if they have a newer driver. Our driver is from January 6, 2014. Or, purchase a PCIe x1 sound card and install it in one of the PCIe x1 slots on the motherboard. Then go into the Bios Setup (F2 on boot) -Advanced -Onboard Device Configuration and disable the Onboard Audio Controller. Press F10 to Save and Exit.

There should be no reason for a "canned" sound coming from your 3847 (which, BTW, I also have) that would require the purchase of a sound card (something I haven't felt the need to do since the 90s) - "entry level" PC moniker notwithstanding (whatever that means in 2014).
Your PC is capable of extremely high-quality sound as-is. In fact, it should have come from the factory with MaxxAudio 4, which allows you to enhance an already capable sound chip even more.
You should be able to see a speaker icon in your lower right program area (when you click on the up facing triangle). When you hover over it, it should say "Dell Audio." Click on that and it gives a great deal of flexibility in adjusting the sound to the specifications you want. If that doesn't work, contact Dell; no need to purchase a sound card of any kind on this machine (or any other desktop in 2014, for that matter).
