The 18" SATA data cable shown in your link will be fine.

You can use any available open SATA connector on the motherboard, except for SATA 0, this is always used for the primary C: / hard drive.

See HERE, P3,P5 and P6 are SATA power connectors.

As this is a Slim case, you will need to purchase , 4 x Dell Hard Drive Shoulder Mounting Screws, the part number is WN322 and these can be purchased from Dell Spare parts @ 1-800-357-3355, M-F 7 to 7 CDT and have system's "Service Tag" handy.

After installing the drive enter the system setup and check that the SATA port the hard drive is connected is 'enabled' [on] and the drive is recognized.

For Vista/Windows 7, to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted.

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management, right click new drive, select format, then you can assign a drive letter.

Thank You Bev for the reply. I had also wondered about how I was going to mount the drive. The part number for the shoulder screws answered that question for me. I found a sata cable for my system on the dell website as well http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/PopupProductDetail.aspx?sku=MD717 I think I will just order it from dell along with the shoulder screws to save on shipping.

However I am still not sure about which sata connector on the mobo to use. According to the documentation in the link you provided Dell recommends you connect Hard drrives to the sata0 and sata1 connectors on the mobo. And connect cd/dvd to the sata4 and sata5 connectors on the mobo. The computer came with the Hard Drive connected to sata0 and the CD/DVD connected to sata1. Should I move the CD/DVD to sata4 and plug the second Hard drive to sata1 or can the second hard drive work fine on the sata4 or sata5 connectors

Well Thank You again Bev :) Primary it is.

I finally got around to installing the new drive. I have decided I would like to set it up just like my first drive. Both drives are 500Gig drives. My first drive has two partitions one for The WinXP os Approx 50Gig and the other for all my saved files approx 400Gig. So I have booted up and I am now in Disk Management. I created the First partition as a Primary partition about 50G just like the first HD. Now I am partitioning the rest of the drive approx 450 as a partition. It ask would I like it as a Primary or Extended partition. I will not be installing an OS on this second partition so should I use Primary or Extended????

I should also add that the first partition on the second drive I made a Primary Partition. That way if the first harddrive ever goes out. I can just switch to the Secondary Harddrive and install XP on the first partition and my backup files will still be safe. So Primary or Extended on the second partition. It will be for back up files only and about 417Gig.
