Install Windows 7 on Dell Dimension 3000 with replacement hard drive
I need to install Windows 7 using a 320 GB hard drive as opposed to the original 40 GB hard drive. However, the drive is not detected and the OS DVD goes around in circles - cannot find the larger drive or any needed drivers (formatted in NTFS and otherwise empty). Any suggestions and process to fix are needed.

The factory setting is Cable Select for Optical and Hard drives. You cannot have a mix of cable select and master/slave on Either set of cables or it will not see any of the drives.

Hi travelerkgd,
You will need to check if the system is detecting the new hard drive connected. Please run the diagnostics on the computer by following the steps mentioned in the video below and check if there is any issue with the hard drive on your system.
1. Turn on or restart the computer.
2. Immediately at the Dell logo screen, starting tapping the key once a second until the One Time Boot menu appears (if the computer boots to Windows turn the computer off and try again).
3. At the One Time Boot menu, press the arrow key to highlight Diagnostics and then press to begin the hardware diagnostics.
4. Write down any error codes listed. Reply to us with the error codes.
Please let me know the findings.

If this is an IDE drive, are the jumpers set correctly?

Yep, the jumper is set to "Master." I appreciate the quick responses and will try the F12 thing asap.

Jumper set to Master is WRONG. Mixing Master/Slave with cable select causes ALL DRIVES to be not seen. Dell sets all drives Optical and hard drive to Cable Select.
All Drives should be set to cable select. A drive set to "cable select" automatically configures itself as master or slave, according to its position on the cable.
Only 80 wire cables with color coded connections should be used.

The OEM hard drive was set to Master, but will try Cable Select - makes sense.
