Installing SSD in XPS 8700

Hello,

I have a quick question about installing SSD into XPS 8700.

I screwed in installation bracket (bay converter) to SSD and put it into horizontal slot of XPS 8700. Unfortunately, I could only secure it from one side of the tower with two bolts.

I cannot remove another side of the tower to put extra bolts.

Is two bolts enough to secure SSD?  How else can I secure inside?

Thank you very much, Bev!

One more quick question. If I need to mount another driver, (I will have to do in only one vertical slot left) should I first remove dell original HDD, mount mine and then put original dell HDD back?

A driver is software, that operates or controls a particular type of device that is attached to a computer, do you mean, installing another SATA hard drive?

The XPS 8700 has a 'Drive Cage' for the two 3.5" hard drives [Primary and Secondary HDs] installed in the top and an option for installing a third hard drive in an horizontal bay located in the front panel

You can find the  all the procedures and instructions for the above here:

The Silverstone Tek 3.5-Inch to 2 X 2.5-Inch Hard Drive HDD SSD Bay Converter, Silver (SDP08) should be fine for the 2.5" SSD.

The XPS 8700 hard drive bays are 3.5", you can find the specifications here:

ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_xps_desktop/xps-8700_Reference%20Guide_en-us.pdf

You will need 8  6-32 x3/16" phillips head screws to secure the SSD and the bay converter in the hard drive bay.

The XPS 8700 does not have a 2.5" bay, the SSD referred too, is an M-SATA drive, that is located on the motherboard [mSATA1 slot]

See pages 13,14 [item 11] and pages 33,34. here:

To install a SSD in a 3.5" bay, you will need a 3.5" to 2.5" adaptor.

Hi Bev,

This info string is helpful for me as well.  Thank you!  I am getting ready to install a Samsung EVO 250 GB SSD 2.5" into my new XPS 8700.  I am a bit confused about the correct physical adapter I need to install this SSD into the existing hard drive bay, underneath the 1 TB HDD that came pre-installed on the 8700.  I am looking at the "Silverstone Tek 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch converter", but I don't clearly see, from the pics on Amazon, how I will be able to secure that mount in the existing drive bay that came pre-installed on my 8700.  The drive bay in my XPS is 4" wide, and I don't see an obvious match for screw positionings or slide-in slots.

Do you know if this Silverstone Tek converter will successfully mount the Samsung 2.5" EVO into the XPS 8700 drive bay, or is there a better alternative?

Thank you in advance for your help!

~M

Ok, thanks Bev.  I will order the Silverstone Tek Bay Converter for my SSD installation.  I also need an SATA connector cable, preferably one that is about 10" long so there is not a lot of dangling wire in my CPU.

Do you have a preference among these three:

Please let me know, when you have time.

Thanks again!

As long as the SATA cable has locking latches and straight connectors, like the OKGear 10 in SATA 3 Cable UV Blue Straight to Straight cable, it should be alright.

Thank you Bev!  I will be receiving the mounting hardware and a couple of different SATA 3 cables (they're so cheap!) on Tuesday, 3/11.  I'll post here again as a follow-up to let people know how the SSD installation goes.

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Bev, I am a bit confused here. I bought a Dell XPS 8700 and have been loving it because it is so fast and quiet and awesome. However, I would like to speed up boot times and such by installing an SSD, and it says on the Dell website: "Support for 4 HDD bays: including (3) 3.5” HDDs
–Capable of 1 SSD and 3 HDD configuration". When I bought this, I understood that it had 3 HDD drive bays (3.5in.) and 1 SSD drive bay (2.5in.). In fact, this is what B&H Photo and Video advertises. I have been looking inside the case and I cannot locate the SSD drive. Can you tell me exactly where I can find this?
