Ivy Bridge is the microarchitecture code name for Intel processors that is manufactured on 22nm process. It is commonly referred as the fourth generation processors.

Each generation has added new feature that increases the number of contacts (the connection link between processor and motherboard) of the processor. Hence, motherboards designed for Sandy Bridge (or any other processor) is not compatible with Ivy Bridge. BIOS update cannot make an impact on the compatibility as BIOS update is on the software level only and does not impact physical parameters or hardware.
