Labtec Webcam
I am trying to attach a webcam to my pc (Dimension L500r) so I can be with my Grandkids on Christmas. Problem: I have downloaded Drivers and everything the disc has but when I open program to use it it says camera is unplugged. I have tried removing everything and redownloading it all and everytime I plug webcam into USB port it says it loads proper driver but I always get Camera is unplugged. I have called and written to Labtec for help and am given a faq page but I have tried everything on that page and nothing has changed. Is Labtec and Dell not compatible? Is there a webcam I can access right a way that is compatable? My zip is 86403 if there is someplace near I can get what I need.
Thanks So Much For Any Help
Dave

Is the webcam atttached to your L500r via a USB cable? I know that my Philips USB webcam and just about every other one I've seen that I can think of off the top of my head require the driver software to be installed before plugging the device in. At a certain point in the installation the software prompts you to plug the camera into a USB port. Be sure you're following the manufacturer's installation instructions to the letter, otherwise you're likely to have no end of problems & the camera may never be detected properly by the operating system.

What version of Windows are you running on your L500r? Do you use any other USB devices with the computer and if so do they function correctly? If the answer to those last two questions is yes then there are only a few possibile causes for your webcam problem; either the camera's USB cable is faulty, there was some sort of installation problem (e.g. - you're using drivers that aren't compatible with the version of Windows you're running, the installation was not done correctly or something else that's installed on your hard drive -- such as antivirus software -- corrupted some of the webcam software's files during installation) or, & this is much more unlikely, the specific USB port you have the webcam plugged into is failing.
You can quickly eliminate the possibility of a nonfunctional USB port by plugging a different USB device into the same port you've been using for the webcam and seeing if it functions. As for troubleshooting the other possibilities, try making use of the following Dell knowledge base document:
