I had some problems with my Maxtor 120GB external hard drive connected to a USB port. The computer would not freeze but but it would "lose" the hard drive. I could disconnect and reconnect the power card to recover use of the drive, but I changed to a firewire connection and have not had any further trouble.
I never did get a fix on why, but hope this may help you.
Is the external drive formatted NTFS or FAT32? I believe FAT32 drives have a 4GB limit on file size. The drive can be reformatted NTFS and comes with instructions to do it. Generally speaking, you need Windows NT/2000/XP to use NTFS drives.
If it turns out it is FAT you should be able to convert the partition to NTFS. This way you should not have to restore you data. Always a good idea to backup just in case.
You run the Convert from a cmd Prompt: Here the syntax
volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name. /FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume is to be converted to NTFS. /V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode. /CvtArea:filename Specifies a contiguous file in the root directory to be the place holder for NTFS system files. /NoSecurity Specifies the converted files and directories security settings to be accessible by everyone. /X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid.
One year on since this complaint. I am using a Maxtor 200 Gb One touch with Pinnacle Studio 9 plus. The system crashes every time on the MXOFX driver during rendering. Anyone got the same problem and managed to solve it?

convert /?
Converts FAT volumes to NTFS.
CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/CvtArea:filename] [/NoSecurity]
volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.
/FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume is to be converted to NTFS.
/V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode.
/CvtArea:filename
Specifies a contiguous file in the root directory to be
the place holder for NTFS system files.
/NoSecurity Specifies the converted files and directories security
settings to be accessible by everyone.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid.
