Memory Upgrade

In an XPS 8500, win 8 64bit, Intel i7-3770 PC, memory ddr3 1600. Is it ok to mix (matched pairs) of memory sticks for example: 2x4gb with 2x8gb sticks to get 24gb memory without the computer having a hissy fit? And does it matter if slots 1,3 is used for either the 4gb or 8gb and slots 2,4 either the 4gb or 8gb sticks. Paired of course. Thanx in advance for any honest reply.

That should be OK. You need to make sure the paired modules are identical. With some older systems (and maybe some newer), the system liked the larger modules in the first two slots. I would also check the user manual to make sure that 1&2 are a pair. With some system boards (again probably only older ones?) 1&3 and 2&4 were the paired slots.

Hi Spitball,

Welcome to the Community.

Dell XPS 8500 has four user-accessible DIMM sockets, all four slots can be accessed after removing the chassis cover. When all four DIMM connectors are populated, the system has optimum dual-channel performance unless channels 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 have different amounts of memory.

Slot 1 Slot 2 Slot 3 Slot 4 Total Memory
2048 MB 2048 MB None None 04 GB
4096 MB 4096 MB None None 08 GB
2048 MB 2048 MB 2048 MB 2048 MB 08 GB
4096 MB 4096 MB 2048 MB 2048 MB 12 GB
4096 MB 4096 MB 4096 MB 4096 MB 16 GB
8192 MB 8192 MB 8192 MB 8192 MB 32 GB

Thanks & Regards

Thanks for the quick reply.

Would it be safe to fill slot 1 and 2 with 4096mb each and slot 3 and 4 with 8192mb each?

can I reverse, using slot 1 and 2 for 8192mb each and slot 3 and 4 for 4096mb each?

In other words, does it really matter what combination I use as long as the sticks are used in paired slots 1&2, 3&4?

Hi Manishu

I note that you have not described a 24GB configuration where Slots 1&2 have 8GB and Slots 3&4 have 4GB (in any order - 4GB in 1&2, 8GB in 3&4 etc).

The Dell XPS8500 Reference Guide also states:

Configurations supported

2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 12 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB

Is there a problem with the 24GB configuration?

Like other on this forum, my XPS was shipped with 2x4GB cards in Slots 1&2. I'd like to add 2x8GB cards to this.

You advice would be greatly appreciated, please. Thanks in advance.
