My Computer Properties

Bought a Dimension 4300 from Dell online, Windows ME preinstalled.

Right-clicking on My Computer to bring up properties, I look at a space where it says 'Registered to' and it doesn't say my name. To other Dell online customers: what does it say on your system? Why doesn't it say the name?

I don't have a directory called application in c:\windows. I looked for "welcome" but I didn't find anything that said "register windows." Did Dell tell you that you had to do that after you bought your system? Is it necessary?

What did My Computer - Properties - Registered To say on your system before you did this?

Do a Find Files for "Welcome" (should be in C:\Windows\Application) - double-click it to open, and you should get the little song and "Welcome to Windows" presentation. One of the options should be "Register Windows." Once you do that, your properties should reflect the fact that the system is "registered" to you.

OK, in Windows ME, you need to go to Start - Help, and choose "Using Windows Millennium Edition" - it should be the top link on the left. Click on "Registering your programs," then "Registering Windows Online." You'll see a link for the Windows Registration Wizard. Follow the prompts, and it'll let you register the OS. If it still doesn't show up in System Properties, try rebooting. If it's still not there, there's a registry hack that will let you get the information in there, but it is NOT necessary to do this. As long as your system is registered to you through Dell, and as long as Dell installed the OS you have on there, they support the operating system. The info in System Properties is more a matter of convenience than anything that is necessary.

You can also get to Registration by running Start - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Windows ME Preview, and click on the two arrows in the upper right of the preview to bypass the video, and select Improved User Experience - Register Windows.
