NIC Failure at Boot on Optiplex 620

I have an Optiplex GX 620 Mini Tower that displays a NIC failure error at boot.   The error message reads "NIC failure. Press F1 to reboot or F2 to go in to setup."  The PC boots normally into windows xp after pressing F1.  The PC also connects to the corporate network and receives an IP address from the network.  This occurred three times, each time after the PC was shut down overnight.  It did not occur during a restart.  There are no error messages in any of the event logs for any type of error.  In BIOS, the Integrated NIC is set to the normal setting.  I also reset the BIOS back to factory defaults.

When this unit is powered off, overnight for instance, is there a status LED glowing at the back of the computer where the Ethernet cable is connected?

While the PC was powered off the lights on the NIC were solid orange and flashing green.
After powering on PC first thing in the morning, This message appeared:
"Alert! Error initializing PCI Express Bridge.
NIC Failure.
Strike F1 to continue or strike F2 to run start up utility."
No diagnostic codes appeared on the front of the PC.
Tried both options and had no response from keyboard.
Powered off PC from Power button and powered back on.
PC started normally.  I did an ipconfig /all function and received the correct IP address and a network connection.  I am also able to ping the IP address.
After boot up, I checked the event viewer and there were no system errors listed.

It could be a bad NIC or you may need a Bios update...

I would suggest booting off of a bootable CD that will take you to dos prompt and run a DOS Nic diag on it. You should be able to find one on the net or on the dell site. When you download the nic drivers, you will usually get the nic diag program with it. If you do a search for it on google, you should get some info on it. Unfortunately the there is no thorough Nic diag on the gx620 diag CD that I know of.

If the Nic is bad and your machine is still under warranty, you should be able to get a replacement board for it. Hope that will give you some insight.
