New PC3-8500 RAM not working in SFF Optiplex 780
I just bought a pair of 4GB sticks (F3-8500CL7D-8GBRL) for my Dell Optiplex 780 SFF.
The manual says it uses DD3-1066, up to 16GB in 4 slots.
Upon installation and when firing up, there's only beeping and the Dell diagnostic lights of 1 & 3 which indicate: "Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error has occurred"
I've tried each module individually in each of the 4 slots (so 8 tests) and then the pair in 1-3 and 2-4 (2 more tests). No joy.
When I return the original PC3-10600 memory (1GB + 2GB) everything works fine.
I am on the latest A15 BIOS. Can anybody see why this RAM wouldn't be happy on that MB...?

Actually I did manage to add 8GB to the stock 3GB, so I'm humming along at 11GB now. The memory that worked was Crucial CT2367692. I had to return the other stuff to NewEgg taking a shipping and restocking fee hit.
Lesson learned..... I'll always go to Crucial now... it's a no-brainer, you tell them what machine you have, they guarantee what RAM will work.

PC3 8500 is too slow its not EVER going to work. PC3 10,600 is usually for 1 gig or 2 gig modules and
You need PC3 12,800 to work for 16 gigs you need

Thx very much for responding!!
I'm confused though... the official Dell manual and specs actually TELL me to get PC3-8500... Then again there was PC3-10,600 in the Dell that was shipped. And Crucial is recommending PC3-12,800... I'm definitely returning the PC3-8500.
Question:
I already have some PC3-10,600 that came with the PC... 3 GB. If I want to add 8GB do I have to stick to PC3-10,600? If they can't be mixed, am I better off losing the 3GB of PC3-10,600 and buying 2x4GB of PC3-12,800? I thought it all got clocked back to 1066 MHZ?
Thx again - super useful help.

Koz, what was the outcome? Did you ever get your machine up to 8 gigs? I have 8 gigs in my 780SFF and I am having the same non recognized beep codes when swapping the models to newer 4 gig models. So far I have tried 3 different types.
Patriot PV316G160C9KRD
Patriot PSD38G1333KH
Kingston KVR16N11S8/4
I currently have installed and I am trying to get up to 16gigs. Running to the store is getting old.
