Optiplex 320 1066MHz FSB

I'm posting on the off-chance that there's a solution to my "problem". I have a 320 and *thought* my E6300 C2D CPU was running just fine in it. Checked BIOS and it showed everything as being correct. However, I noticed in Windows "System" it shows as running at 1.4GHz rather than 1.86GHz. Obviously this is because it's running at 800MHz FSB rather than 1066FSB.

I came upon a posting here from someone who claimed to have an E6700 running successfully at 1066MHz FSB (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19332157/19696121.aspx#19696121) which gave me hope. I *thought* maybe the new BIOS (1.1.12) made the difference. However, it says it deals with WOL and, sure enough, after flashing from 1.1.11, no difference.

So, is there some trick to getting it to work? Have I got the wrong motherboard (I've got a minitower)? I also saw reference to something called "Clockgen" - can I use that to bump the speed at least somewhat?

Thanks.

Hi Khobar,

I'll drop a note to our moderators for you about this. Very interesting issue.

Thanks. What's funny is that the 320 with the C2D@1.4GHz is a bit faster than a 620 with a Dual Core@3.2GHz (according to Performance Mark 6.1). If I can bump the C2D speed up any at all that would be great.

Pick up and run CPU-z and see what that reports. It could be just that your CPU is throttling down when in idle mode. This is by design

CPU-Z says it's running at 200MHz FSB x7 for 1400MHz.

Is there something else I should look at there? Are there any switches?

I would set the windows  power scheme to run at 'Always On'. I believe your processor is throttling itself - a part of Core 2 Duo's Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2) function
In laptop it is called Intel Speedstep......... It works by dropping the multiplier when the processor load is low

khobar,

Go into the Bios System Setup- Performance. To what are these set?

HyperThreading (On default)

Multiple CPU Core (On default)

SpeedStep (Off default)

Hi khobar,

I'm the guy with the Optiplex 320 running an e6700 core2duo.  Have you tried updating your chipset driver to the latest version, direct from ATI?  It definitely helped my overall system performance, which was very sluggish previously -- it's possible that has some bearing on your situation.

Go to the AMD (ATI) support web site, and download the motherboard/chipset drivers for ATI Xpress 200 chipset.

Also, I was curious what speed RAM you have.  Mine has DDR2 667mhz from Crucial.  I wonder if slower RAM might prevent the motherboard from using the higher FSB speed of the cpu...?

Let me know if there's any other information from my machine that might help you.  I'm happy to take a look and provide it...

-Dan

p.s. this is the driver I installed from ATI:

Hi Dan,

Much appreciate the reply. The system was for my son who seems to be enjoying it very much as is. However, I would very much like to see about the 1066MHz FSB just to get the most out of it. RAM speed is 533MHz.

I will check the current drivers and update as necessary. I know I updated some of them, not sure if I got them all though.

I had hoped the new BIOS would simplify things but it didn't, and after reading what it does I'm not surprised.

If I have any success I'll post my results.

All the best,

Khobar

Khobar

Your not alone. My 320 had an E6400 running XP Pro at 1.8mhz with bios 1.1.12. and no Speedstep running

The bios properly labels it as an E6400 but it seem to only run at 800fsb.

I gave up and put an E2140 I had lying around into it.

Sorry that should read 'running at 1.6mhz'  not 1.8

Mobo is a CN-0MH651-70821-6CJ-D1CG (Rev A01)

PotterManDan,

Any way you can provide us with a picture of your CPU-Z screenshot?  I am very skeptical and find it hard to believe that you can run 1066MHz on the Dell Optiplex 320.  My Dell Optiplex 320 freezes after anything above 910 MHz.

I forgot to mention this is an E6300 Conroe chip, if that matters.

I've still not got it going right. I did try finding ATi drivers but kept coming up with display drivers. According to Wiki, the RS400 is capable of 1066MHz FSB, so it should work (ha ha).

I have the same problem

i tried Conroe E6600 (2,4 GHz) but it works only at 1,8GHz with FSB

I have to use E4600 (2,4GHz) it works corectly (FSB 800MHz)

Do you have any experience with pentium E5200 (FSB 800MHz, 2,4GHz) ???

it is wolfdale pentium 45nm

BIOS 1.1.12 has lates update 2011 !!! but corectly works only old proccesors

I cant it understand !!!
