Optiplex 7010 win 7, 64bit- Can not wake computer from sleep, using keyboard or mouse. Ideas?

Boot to the BIOS and find the sleep options. There are several. You can set the system to block sleep mode, or you can enable/disable "deep sleep mode" (S4 and S5). Obviously, disabling sleep would allow you to leave the system running and you'd only need to lock out the OS when you walk away.

I will do that, but it still does not fix the original problem. It is a nice work around, but not a fix.

This is a problem that Dell should fix.

There are reasons why Windows 7 disables power management. This is really a software problem. My suggestion would be to do some searching on how to re-enable power management. There are a variety of services or drivers that could cause the problem.

Thanks again, ospray4! That is what thought, but I couldn't get anyone at microsoft, to tell me how to fix the problem either. In fact, they told me to contact Dell.

By the way, power management problems with desktops are quite common. The problem with desktops is they are infinitely more upgradeable than laptops, so that many more things to go wrong.

Hi Griff, You need to change the Power Management setting in the BIOS.  Enable the 'USB Wake Support' and the mouse and keyboard wake will work, the Power Management tabs will also appear.

Thanks, Jim. MY problem is that there is no power management tab, anywhere on this computer. Even my son with a degree in computer science, has not been able to find a way to make this work.

Did you try the "powercfg" command line trick I linked to above?

Osprey, I did exactly as you suggested in the powercfg command line trick. To this point in time, I have not noticed any change at all. I guess, I will just have to get used to reaching for the power button, to wake this computer. It's not really a big deal, I just thought I would change it to work like every other computer that I have ever used. Guess not, I will have to change. Thanks for all your time and trouble.

Sorry we weren't able to make more progress.

Are you logged in as Administrator? The Power Management tab only appears when you're using the Administrator account.

You might also try booting in Safe Mode and looking for that tab.

At least in XP, the tab won't show if USB devices are connected, so disconnect all USB except mouse and keyboard and look again.
