Optiplex 740 not upgrading to Win7

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere...

I have tried intently but failed to upgrade a stock, 2 yr old Optiplex 740 to Win7. The upgrade advisor said it's compatible, but the install failed repeatedly at the exact same spot - on the very last step as it's finishing the install. There are lots of posts about others getting this same freeze error, with suggestions and 'fixes' ranging from tweaking settings to changing hardware. I am simply trying to find out if I'm wasting my time. Is the AMD Athlon processor an issue?

And Dell, your website offers no definitive help, either. YOu're initally led to believe there's a listing of compatible systems, but when you click thru to Optiplex 740, you're siply told about the upgrade advisor. Now that's not very helpful, ya know?

Anyone been able to upgrade?

The best section to post this in, would be the Software & Operating > Microsoft OS forum HERE, this board is for Desktop Hardware.

Is this a desktop or mini tower? I've seen the Win7 setup work on a the desktop 740s but for some reason they won't install on the mini towers.  My boss thought perhaps it had something to do with the Bios version but more than likely I'm thinking it's the motherboards.

Yes, this is a mini-tower, which furthers what you've found. I have wasted no more time on this machine, so it's still running XP Pro and probably will until we get rid of it. Just not worth the time and effort. Sad, really. Wish we'd known the truth about it's upgradability when we bought it.

If anyone out there can confirm what I've experienced it would be most helpful actually.  I'm running Vista 64bit on my 740 at the moment.
