Optiplex 745 - udma 2 only
I have a Dell Optiplex 745, Service Tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>. It is running win 7 64-bit. I upgraded it from XP Pro 32-bit. Original WD800JD drive which supports up to ATA/100, udma mode 4 or 5. The ATA channel runs in udma 2 mode per Device Manager.
I have tried a number of things to upgrade the Intel chipset that don't work. The latest driver Device Manager installs is the one it appears I'm stuck with.
Given my Service Tag number, can someone at Dell tell me if this particular Optiplex should run at a higher udma mode than 2, which is ATA/33. If it should, what the heck can I do to fix this? I cannot seem to successfully upgrade any chipset drivers except for what Device Manager finds looking on it's own.
I also bought a new Seagate 500 GB drive and installed it yesterday in place of the DVD and it too comes up in udma mode 2 which is crazy. This is a brand new drive and should come up in udma 6 at least.
Any help appreciated.

Well, I had read on one web hit about this problem that chkdsk should be run. It finished while I was posting this new topic. Afterwards, the ATA channel 0 is now running udma 6. Not only that but now there are 2 x ATA 0 channels and 2 x ATA 1 channels. This fits given the SATA ports (only 2 in the Desktop Optiplex) are connected to the 4 port controller.
So, running chkdsk fixed the problem. Not sure how but maybe there was a file that was misleading the OS. 73 files got reparsed and x number of file descriptors fixed, no bad blocks. Go figure, anyhow, I'm happy, disk I/O is much better :)

The issue is that you are running on the ATA Driver not the INTEL Matrix Storage Manager( MSM) which became Rapid Storage Technology (RST) You cannot force a 2015 version of the driver to work by hacking the registry. Its not going to happen.
The Drive you mention is MUCH Faster than UDMA 133 MB/s

You don't get to time travel and get 2015 features in a 2005 chipset.
You are asking for WIN10 support for EOL system that did not ship with WINDOWS 7.

SATA 1 is 150 meg which is faster than all the UDMA IDE Modes with UDMA 133 being Max.
The windows driver will fall back all the way to PIO 16 meg mode.
Newer and Newer versions of the driver DO NOT SUPPORT OLDER And OLDER versions of the chipset.
Further complicating this is that Advanced Format Drives AHCI requires this driver.
You have to figure out which Driver supports your chipset. The Current Version 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, absolutely do NOT support your ICH aka the sata controller.
Version 8.9 might
Less likely that 9.6 or 10.1 or 10.3
9.6 I would think is Max but you will have to try it.

I had to revisit this issue after upgrading to Windows 10 because at some point pre or during upgrade to Win 10, the root drive went back to udma 2 mode.
I tried everything I could find on the internet to get back to udma 6 but no luck. I am building a new computer with a SSD drive anyhow, so leaving this alone. Here are some things I learned:
* In the bios, SATA Operation choices are 'Normal' and 'Legacy'. Normal equates to native which will support Native Command Queuing (NCQ) although I am not sure this old WD drive supports NCQ.
* All attempts to modify registry in Win 10 for storahci>StartOverRide and IAstorV.. changing 3 to 0 were no help.
* Booting in safe mode then normal startup no help
* Installing latest Q965 Express chipset driver from Intel no help
Even going back to Win 7 I cannot get back to udma 6. Maybe the drive is tired, who knows. Anyhow, can't wait to start using my new DIY computer with Asus Mobo and i5-4690K processor etc.
Good luck if you keep banging away trying to get this problem resolved !
