Optiplex 755: Unkown hardware components in Windows 7

Question

Hi,

I´ve installed Windows 7 Professional 32bit at my Optiplex 755. Now the device manager shows two unknown hardware components. I´ve installed the actually INF-Update from Intel for Windows 7 but always the same unknown components. All additional hardware was recognized successful.

Anyone knows which drivers I needed?

I'm not going to swear that this will work for you but I had the same devices showing up in my Windows 7 test install for our corporate network, only in English. One thing I did is check the BIOS update and as usual there was a new one available, not that it matters for the problem you have but you may as well do the update as you go if you don't have A15, for that matter you may as well apply all the recommended Dell updates.

The items listed as not having drivers can be fixed with the AMT-HECI and AMT-SOL-LMS updates available from the dell downloads for your Optiplex 755 computer. Extract the downloads to the default directory C:\Dell\Drivers and make a note on which one you are doing, personally I rename the extraction folder so I know what is in the directory if I need it later, example C:\Dell\Drivers\AMT-HECI-R194010\ and C:\Dell\Drivers\AMT-SOL-LMS-R194011. They will not install automatically and if they act like they will just cancel out of it since they fail after the install anyway with a licence purchase requirement most people don't have.

You can manually point to them from device manager by right clicking on the devices and using the update driver option and browse to the folders where you extracted the drivers. If you happen to pick the wrong folder it will just tell you the driver can't be updated so just finish that and go through the update option again pick the next folder, do the same process to update the other driver and life should be good.

I'm going from memory here so don't hold me to it but I think the PCI device is the AMT-HECI and the serial device is the AMT-SOL-LMS. If not then you have a 50-50 chance of getting it right by guessing and nothing to lose if you get it wrong, like i said just pick the other folder the next time.

Install

1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled Intel_AMT-HECI_A02_R255437.exe.

2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or

unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R255437. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.

Setup.exe) file can be found later.

3.The Self-Extractor window appears.

4.Click OK.

5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor

window is still open, close it.

6.Click the Start button and then click Run.

7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R255437 in the Open textbox and then click OK.

8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

schluri,The first device is apparently a PCI modem. I don't know of any direct translation for anschluss from German to computerese but my best educated guess is that's a serial port card.

For all who posted here and had good results... in Windows 7. I noticed that both articles (R194010 and R194011) refer only to Vista and XP 32-bit and 64-bit. Do I assume correctly that these are core level enough that they then translate across to Win 7 just fine as far as BIOS work goes? (I noticed all of you seemed ot be in the Win 7 mode due to the title of the thread.)

Addition: I did just update my BIOS to A15 (from A10) and the two PCI devices are still complaining in the device list! A restart of the machine does verify that it identifies the BIOS version level as A15. R194010 and 11 mentioned here are dated 7-17-2009 and A01 as opposed to A15's 9-17-2009 date. Is the suggestion to go retrograde, then, ElderMonk?

I had no problem with both 194010 and 194011 win7 x86 or x64. with BIOS A15

If you turn off the Intel Management Engine these devices will not appear and so the drivers will not be required. Ctrl-P Boot option.

***** Worth noting - to access the ME engine - Ctrl-P boot option, you need to enter a password - default is admin from dell user guide.

However to create a new password is a bit of a pain - from Intel notes, see below, it is not in the 755 User Guide. Note that the special keys are for a US not a UK keyboard so @ is above the 2!

Intel Management Engine passwords must be between 8 and 32 characters long, have at least one upper case character, one lower case character, one number, and a special character (for example: !, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *).

I have used this to fix the same devices in Vista and Windows 7 without any issues. The solution I offered here by simply going to the device manager and picking out the two devices with issues and updating the drivers is safe from what I have seen in testing and in production in our environment.

Intel also has a browser based Driver Update Utility that will detect Intel components (chipset, NIC, video), and tell you if you need to download updates from Intel. The downloads are provided in a list, it is very easy.

You will need the same drivers for W8CP as you do with Windows 7 (audio, chipset) - just use the Windows 7 drivers from the download site - they work just fine.
