Optiplex 760

How do I find out what is needed to allow use of VT -x on this machine.

I have a pentium Dual processor CPU E2200 @ 2.20MHz

I cannot find the motherboard info?

I tried to follow some threads from some time ago but could get much info out of them.

the machine is out of warranty.

Greetings Shipinomore!

Thanks for your question.

The Optiplex 760 does support VT. However, the E2200 processor does not.

You'll have to upgrade the processor. Once upgraded, you may have to enter the BIOS and enable VT.

Below are some of the processors available for the 760 that support VT.

Dell part numbers:

J557T E7600

PNF3X E7500

MYC14 E7400

4D5DN E6500

F858T E6300

9055X E5300

Note: I'm not an expert on Intel Virtualization. I just wanted to share with you the data I have regarding VT and the 760.

Hi Justin C,

I would also like to enable virtualization on my Optiplex 760 (with the E7400 processor). Unfortunately in the A16 version of the BIOS, the VT option is not available.

Perhaps this option should be enabled in the next BIOS revision because:

The Optiplex 760 does support VT.

...and these processors apparently support it too:

J557T E7600

PNF3X E7500

MYC14 E7400

4D5DN E6500

F858T E6300

9055X E5300

Good day Sheer_volume,

Thank you for your post.

Per your feedback, I did some further research. I found out that there are E7400s with VT and E7400s without VT. There are other models as well. I have listed them below.

Processors with VT:

J557T E7600

PNF3X E7500

MYC14 E7400

4D5DN E6500

F858T E6300

9055X E5300

Like processors without VT:

K983K E7400

P960K E7500

K086M E5300

I had the same issue before.

I had the E2200 on the OptiPlex 760 and got a E6500 refurbished one for 18 dollars from China and it is in and works great. the bios was a16. right now running Windows 10 TR and various Linux distros

running VMPlayer 7.0 and is working fine.

Larry.

Most when they ask this is because they don't want to spend the money on a precision workstation or server and they want to run ESX.    VT has different parts.Support for VT-x will vary between different versions (as identified by Intel's sSpec Number) of the same model number.

VT-X is not the same as VT-D and not all motherboard combinations / chipsets support both. Intel's "Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O" (VT-d)
