Hello,

Optiplex 790 has a Intel Q65 Express Chipset and supports Sandy Bridge (2nd Generation i3, 2nd Generation i5 and 2nd Generation i7). The system was tested and shipped with 2 kinds of i7 processors.
1. Intel Core i7 2600 / 3.40GHz.
2. Intel Core i7 2600S / 2.80GHz.

According to the system specification, I would like to say that the system should be compatible with Intel Core i7-2700K Sandy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHzTurbo) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000.

Please write back if you have any further queries.

Thanks for your reply.

There are several options for upgrading the processor, including sandy bridge and ivy bridge processors.  My question is this:

Will any Intel LGA 1155 socket processor work in my 790?

There is a

Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I73770K Manufacturing Tech: 22 nm

that is actually less expensive than this:

Intel Core i7-2700K Sandy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623i72700K Manufacturing Tech: 32 nm

I just don't want to buy the Ivy Bridge processor and find out that it is not compatable.

Thanks for your help on this issue.

Hello Buddtx,

Thank you for replying. As I have mentioned that the Optiplex 790 has a Intel Q65 Express Chipset and was tested and shipped with Intel Core i7 2600 / 3.40GHz and Intel Core i7 2600S / 2.80GHz.

However, looking at the specification of the Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000, and comparing it with Intel Core i7-2700K Sandy Bridge 3.5GHz, I would like to inform you that, it should be compatible with the system.

I found something interesting, hoping a dell tech person can confirm.

I believe that the Dell Optiplex 790 DOES NOT support Ivy bridge, because it uses the Intel Q65 Chipset.

The 790 uses the Intel® Q65 Express Chipset. (Verified - not my question )

www.dell.com/.../pd

I believe that the Intel Q65 DOES NOT support Ivy bridge.

The Wiki page says this:

Sandy Bridge chipsets, except Q65, Q67 and B65, support both Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs through a BIOS upgrade.

en.wikipedia.org/.../LGA_1155

The Intel Website for the Q65 Express Chipset does not list any "Ivy Bridge" i7 chips.

What got me started on this, was a video on newegg.com about the ivy bridge processor

they listed in the video the intel chipsets that are compatable with the Ivy Bridge processors

Specifically, they mentioned H61- H67 - P67 - Z68

www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

I found a reference at PC Magazine also:

Only four motherboards using the 6 Series chipsets support Ivy Bridge (H61, H67, P67, and Z68), but if your computer already uses one of those you already have everything you need.

www.pcmag.com/.../0,2817,2403407,00.asp

Here is a quote from maximumpc.com

However, not all chipsets will make the Ivy Bridge cut. Intel has intentionally left out support for the business chipsets Q65, Q67, and B65 while supporting consumer H61, H67, P67, and Z68. Why leave some out? Intel believes the day of an IT shop getting down and dirty and upgrading processors in an office-drone PC are long gone, so there’s just no reason to expend the resources on unnecessary support. Besides getting the latest core technology from Intel, switching to Ivy Bridge on older 6-series boards should also give you PCIe 3.0 support on some slots.

Oh forgot, I tried two different monitors, using the VGA port, and the DisplayPort, just in case there was a DisplayPort issue or monitor issue.

PLEASE HELP - I tried tonight to put a i7 processor into my Dell Optiplex 790.

Specifically, this one:

Intel Core i7-2700K Sandy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623i72700K

Using A16 BIOS (Latest as of 1-5-2013)

Power would turn on, and there were NO POST BEEPS, but there was no video, even video BIOS was not there, but the computer looked like it was booting into Windows 7 64 bit (the same OS).

I tried taking out the i7 chip and re-installing the i3 chip three times, and all three times, the i3 chip booted without problem, but the i7 2700K did not post.

So, can anyone offer any thoughts or help or suggestions as to what to do next?

Please note, this was a 2nd generation SANDY BRIDGE, and NOT the newer 3rd generation IVY BRIDGE.

I have about 25 days or so to exchange (not return) my i7 processor.

I am going to write intel also.

I am wondering if the Q65 chipset does not support the i7 2700K?

Also, I am wondering if it has to do with the Intel Graphics?  The i3 has Intel HD Graphics 2000, whereas the 2700K (and the 2600K) have Intel HD Graphics 3000?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Well this is interesting:

Intel's web site on the Q65 Chipset:

ark.intel.com/.../Intel-BD82Q65-PCH

Does NOT list the 2700K as a compatible CPU.

Here is what it lists:

Compatible Processors

Intel® Core™ i5-2400 Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.40 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i5-2400S Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.30 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i5-2500 Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i5-2500K Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i5-2500S Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i5-2500T Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.30 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i7-2600K Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i7-2600S Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)

So I am guessing that the Q65 chipset and Optiplex 790 DOES support the HD Intel Graphics 3000 processor.

Again, just asking for confirmation as to what the the most powerful CPU I can put into a Optiplex 790.

Thanks.

Sorry for writing so much.

So I guess here is where I am right now:

Unless someone from Dell can confirm that the i7-2700K should work with the 790 (maybe a BIOS upgrade is needed), I personally found out that the i7-2700K does NOT work with the Optiplex 790.

My realistic options are the three i7 2600 Sandy Bridge Quad core CPU's

i7-2600 (Intel HD Graphics 2000) - 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) (Confirmed works with Optiplex 790-See Post 2)

i7-2600S (Intel HD Graphics 2000) - 2.8GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) (Confirmed works with Optiplex 790See Post 2)

i7-2600K (Intel HD Graphics 3000) - 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost)

I could "try" the 2600K, and pay for shipping both ways, if it does not work, or just get the i7-2600.

The 2600K has the newer HD Graphics 3000, and that would be nice to have, but realisticly, this computer is 100% for business, so the difference between the graphic options would be negliable.  I just want the fastest processor I can get in the 790.

I will wait a few days to see if anyone from Dell can confirm that there might be some hope for my i7-2700K, if not, I will get the i7-2600.

Thanks!

Hi all, I created a dell community account just to comment in this thread. I like many others own an optiplex 790 desktop. I also like many others desired to upgrade the CPU. Unfortunately I do not believe that the motherboard in these machines supports ANY CPU that utilizes intel hd3000 graphics. For my own attempt, I purchased an intel core i7-2600k processor. Like others reported above I do not get any video output whatsoever despite having the latest bios (a17 in my case). Reinstalling the old i5-2400 causes the computer to resume normal operation. I am quite disappointed in Dell regarding this issue. Only a couple of socket changes ago (lga775) you could put in any old core 2 duo or quad processor In most dell desktops assuming the chipset was new enough to support them. There is no reason for this artificial limitation to be imposed as the i7-2600k was released at the same time as the cpu's that shipped in this machine. The Q65 chipset also fully supports the intended CPU upgrade and it doesn't consume any more power than any other of the other quad core sandy bridge chips. There is no legitimate reason for this CPU not to work in these machines. Not to mention the ridiculous pci-e slot 35w power limit but that's a rant I"ll save for another time. Now that I've gotten that off of my chest I hope that dell will realize the significant inconvenience that they are causing some of their enthusiast customers and change their behavior accordingly.
