Optiplex 9020 SFF - m.2 ssd
I have a Optiplex 9020 SFF with a 3.5" HDD and optical drive. What I want to do is add an ssd and move the OS to this ssd and then use the current HDD as a secondary hard drive for files, etc.
Searching through the forums, the two primary ways to accomplish this:
- Remove the optical drive and use a caddy that can hold the ssd and then use the existing SATA cable for the optical drive to run the ssd. There are mixed reviews on this method though as it can potential cause issues as most caddies comes with a pass through for the data pins and can cause occasional freeze-ups, or high CPU usage.
- Use a Y cable to split the existing SATA cable that powers the HDD so that it can run both the HDD and SSD and then use velcro or something similar to stick it somewhere in the case. This seems the easiest but I have a little hesitancy about just sticking an SSD somewhere - i.e. what happens if I stick it to the top of the fan case and it eventually falls off and onto the graphics PCIe card? I am trying to see if there is a low profile pcie ssd bracket that I could use to secure it, but not finding anything.
Another option I was wondering is if it is possible to use a low profile pcie to M.2 card such as this and then just get a 120 GB M.2 card - www.amazon.com/.../ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_2
I don't know if this option would work to run the OS off of and if the motherboard could support it, but would be a much cleaner solution.

could you--
-buy a SSD with transfer software included
-install the new ssd, and run the software to "clone" the disk over to the new drive.
-format/wipe the m2 and use as storage
just thinking out loud....and of course-- BACKUP ANYTHING YOU WANT TO KEEP BEFORE CLONE in case something goes bad.
not sure on the caddy--my 5040 sff had a caddy for the HD, and under that is the optical....
although not ideal, I have installed drives without cady or mounting-- and yes-- there is the possibility of it getting knocked around in there , hitting something, or even shorting out the MB. that a risk that's up to you.

Another solution is to use a Silverstone SDP08 bracket with an SSD and laptop drive.

Thank you for the reply - I looked into this, but ultimately I plan on swapping out the current 3.5 HDD with a 3TB WD Purple HDD (or similar) as this is a security camera pc.
As far as I could tell, they only make these drives in 3.5".

Would an m2 ssd work with the 9020 sff - meaning it could boot up off of it?
