Optiplex 9020 no audio on PCI Sound Card

I have several Optiplex 9020 machines that I am trying to install a PCI soundcard to get 5.1 surround. I have disabled the onboard sound via the BIOS. When you start playing something you will get a few seconds of sound then it will begin to skip, after that the sound is gone. The only way to get sound back is to reboot and then the same thing happens again. I have tried 2 different types of cards on 3 different machines. That leads me to believe that it is a computer problem. Anyone else had this problem? have an answer?

Sounds like a hardware resource issue. Test a PCIe x1 sound card.

The ASUS XONAR Card is PCI-E 1.0 and the newer systems do not Clock Down the PCI-E 3.0 bus to accomodate the card.  There are Many PCI-E 1.0 cards that have bus timing issues with newer systems.

This issue is not new.  The other Item is that the XONAR card Requires a 4 pin Molex power connection but thats a side issue and doesnt adress the bus speed problem.

okay, with that being said. Would you know of a Card that I could put into the system that would allow me to have 5.1 sound out. Asus does have a XONAR GDX card. Would that work?

If this is a PCI 2.0  5V card the issue is the 32 bit 33mhz pci bus bandwidth.  You did not say what vendor or model of card you are using.
