Optiplex 980 - System Halt - incorrect password - totally locked out of my computer :(
I installed Win 10 on Sunday, Aug 16 to my 32-bit Optiplex 980. On Monday, I was trying to install Win 10 64-bit, had selected Windows recommended install, the system asked for a password (which I never use and didn't know) so after 7 unsuccessful attempts, I have been locked out of my computer since then.
After hours of trying to trouble shoot with Microsoft, thinking it was a Win 7 password issue or Win 10 installation issue, I was flat out told it is a Dell Issue. I have spent 2 days reading everything I can find to try and solve this issue. At this point Dell wants to charge $239 for trouble shooting, since I am out of warranty. As I have plans to buy a new computer in November, I see no reason to spend that. I was asked to send a picture of my screen which I did and so finally today I was at least told by Dell that it is not a BIOS issue as I thought. Quote from Dell tech: "It is a System password issue which needs to be configured in the BIOS menu". Well if the system is halted, I do not see anyway to get into the BIOS Menu.
On the screen where I a locked out , it says Dell System Optiplex 980 series, BIOS version A14 . Performing automatic IDE configuration, then it Enter Password, which continually fails.
BTW, I also ran a BIOS check for password with my Express Service tag, was given 3 potential passwords, none of which worked. I had been instructed by another Dell tech to type in the password, hold down the CTRL key and hit enter twice. None of the 3 passwords worked.
I am at wits end and hope one of the Rock Stars or anyone with knowledge about this issue, who can help me get back to work will respond to my request for help.
Thank you in advance.
