Optiplex 980, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, unexpected restart

Are you having any static electricity problems?  That is one potential issue.   Are you using UPS systems with these units? (if no, you should be).

Yes, we have UPS system. Electricity outage is surely not the issue. We have next 25 other computers which runs on the same electrics and they weren't restarted for several weeks already. I thought if this is some known Windows or drivers or BIOS version issue or something like that.

I installed the latest BIOS Version (A05) but ...

Know I'm sure it's the RAM!

Dell delivered us a week later the same OptiPlex 980, only the RAM is another one, and it works. So, I switched the RAM from the busy one to the “free from error one” and I had the same problem with it. I also switched the RAM from the “free from error one” to the busy one and know, it works fine ... !

same problem on our three computers.. new drivers, problem remains Dell Optiplex 980, Windows 7 64bit

did you try to switch off one of the pc?

and after 3 days, swicth it on again?

because my problem is when i'm swicthing back that pc this week..
same problem occured again...

i've called dell today,
they will send their new parts & technician to check my PC today...

i'm just really-really hope that dell take a look at this matter (seriously)

yes, I switched it off at today morning, and I didn't had any problems, after I switched it on again ...

I have the exact same problem with my new Optiplex 980, I had it reboot unexpectedly today when i was infront of it. Usually when a Bluescreenerror appears you get a brief bluescreen, but my monitor just went black into powersave. There is no mention of any crash in the eventlog, just that the system lost power.

I have 16 GB ram in my optiplex. I will call dell after the holidays and see what they have to say about this.

We have about 50 new Optiplex 980's here at a public library. They have been in about 6 months. Here are a couple observations:

1) about a third of them, the power button feels like it does not move at all when you press them. There is no normal push in, pop back out on the switch.

2) [Randomly on different computers] I have had several not boot, the code on the front showing 1,3,4. If I turn off and turn back on it goes right back to the 1,3,4 error. If I turn off and unplug them, wait about 5 sec. them plug them in, they start fine.

3) [Randomly on different computers] Several have had a bios memory error but rebooted fine.

I'm leaning towards the switch being the problem but have not checked to see if the ones having a boot problem also have a odd switch.

We just bought a 980 with win 7 x64 for my boss, and spent 2 days setting it up so that it would be exactly like her sagging windows xp desktop.

we installed it and everything went great, until monday morning when i walked by her office and it sounded like it was turning off and on, over and over again. 

later that day, she called me saying that the machine had just turned itself off and was now restarting. i can't believe dell is still selling this desktop with this issue.

Both the 980s and the 990s have this problem.  one dell rep told me it was because the power supplies provided with the machines were underpowered (especially when using a higher end video card).
