Optiplex CPU upgrade - fails to boot

Question

Greetings all!

I have a very old optiplex 160L that I am working on. I am attempting to upgrade the original Celeron 2.0 cpu with a refurbished P4-2.80 hz cpu.

The install went fine until I plugged in the power cord - the system immediately powered up without me pushing the power button but failed to boot. The only indication I get is the orange light on the front panel - no beeps and nothing on the screen. I reinstalled the Celeron cpu and it booted up normally. I've tried switching the cpu several time with the same results.

The Optiplex 106L is running Windows XP, 2 gigs memory, the current BIOS is A04 dated 10/20/2003. The mbo is Dell part # F5949 with the 82845GV chipset. The cpu socket is a 478 - Dell tech support has confirmed the P4-2.80 cpu is compatable.

I assume I either have a bad P4 cpu or some thing else is wrong. Has anyone seen this before or have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

You cannot use a prescott. That is what you have.

Just to be sure, pop the Celeron back in and make sure the system still works.

Please tell me about the new CPU. What are the exact specs (FSB, cache, etc.)? I believe this system takes a Northwood processor. Is that what you got?

Yes, the Celeron does work when reinstalled. I have swapped CPUs several times with the same results - Celeron works, P4 does not.

The P4 details: Intel Pentium 4 2.8 AGHz 533 MHz 1 MB Socket 478.

Etching on the cpu: Pentium 4 2.8/1M/533 SL7PK Philipppines 75298285.

I believe it is a Northwood processor - that is what I searched for when I bought it. I have not been able to find the reference on Intel's site tonight to confirm it for you but I believe it is the Northwood.

The symptoms are still the same - system powers up as soon as I reconnect the power cord, but does not boot. No post, no beeps, and no screen image - nothing other than the orange light on the front panel. Pushing the power button has no affect.

Let me know what you think - I'm at a loss.

No wonder it didn't work - what a dumb mistake - sorry to trouble you with something so obvious.

At least that is an easy and a cheap lesson.
