Optiplex gx620 Failing to start

Hi all,

I am wondering can anyone help me. I have a gx620. It fails to start. I get no display on startup. Its showing a flashing green no3 diagnostic light. The fans are running. no beeps and no display. I opened the side of it and i can see a solid amber light on the motherboard. Does this mean anything?

Thanks in advance

Would that definitely mean a motherboard problem or could the processor be a problem also?

I would try replacing the motherboard first, as motherboard testing is virtually impossible, due to the complexity of components, and it is difficult to distinguish a faulty processor from a faulty motherboard and very few processors fail.

Unfortunately, while a person can make an informed diagnosis, sometimes computer troubleshooting, due to the complexity of components, is diagnostics by substitution.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I have the mini tower version.

It is a blinking green. all seems to be ok at the start of power up but no display and 3rd light solid green. after about 20 seconds massive power drain followed by blinking 3rd light. also a solid amber light is on the motherboard. i have taken everything apart down to the motherboard and psu. when turned on i get no beeps and still no display.

The Optiplex GX620 has four different versions, Ultra Small Form Factor Computer, Small Form-Factor Computer, Desktop Computer and Mini-Tower Computer, what is your version?

What colour is the power button LED and is it blinking, or solid?

xx G x Diagnostic Light indicates a processor failure, this can be either the processor, or the motherboard and/or both, first try reinstalling the processor, to see if this makes a difference.

That's normal, this is the standby power light [aka Flea Power] and only indicates that the motherboard has +5VFP power reaching it.

Well i replaced the motherboard and then got a solid amber light on the power button so i proceeded to replace the psu with a known good psu and still got a no go. I then decided for the hell of it i would change the processor and poof it works. Now i think i will proceed to put together the old unit 1 piece at a time to test other components as i believe the psu is good and possibly motherboard ha. oh well at least the new motherboard only cost 10 euro. I will probably stick with the new one but will keep old as a spare.

Thanks for the help Bev, it was much appreciated.
