PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge issues

Hey all,

I've been trying to migrate my machine at work to 2008 Server R2 and am having some trouble getting a PCI graphics adapter working.  Regardless of which PCI slot I plug the card into, I see a resource problem in Device Manager indicating either a "The device cannot start. (Code 10)" or "The device cannot find enough free resources to use... (Code 12)" issue with the PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge component.  I have tried modifying IRQ assignments in the BIOS to ensure no conflicts, but nothing seems to help.  Here's the system configuration:

Dell PowerEdge 840, A05 Bios
Dell Perc 5/i RAID Controller + 4-disk Raid-0 array
Onboard Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
Matrox Millenium P690 PCI graphics adapter
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 64-bit

The same hardware configuration was working fine on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2, so I'm assuming this is some sort of bug with the pci driver for 2008.  I really need to get this issue resolved, so if anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.  Thanks!

Still having this problem.  Have tried updating the system BIOS and other drivers but no luck.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I have the same problems with a similar setup

I have an ATI 2400 PCI Graphics card installed and Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64 bit but apart from that it’s the same system.

I have exactly the same problem – did you find a fix for this ?

Let me know how you got on please

Thanks

Hi Breadloaf,

Unfortunately, I did not find a solution.  I ended up using a GeForce FX 5200 in the box which kind of works but is still pretty flaky.  It really would be nice if someone from Dell would address this issue.

Thanks for your Quick Response Zakle its appreciated, What's flaky about the 5200 as I might get one to use in my 840

I actually want to run dual screen on the box at 1920x1200 if possible

Do you think this will work - are there ny proper drivers for the card ?

Thaks again - keep well

Hey Breadloaf,

What's flaky is that I see visual artifacts regularly and that is probably a result of using a Vista 64-bit driver for the 5200 since I couldn't find one for Windows 2008 R2.  In addition, the colors are washed out and not at an appropriate level of quality.  It's been sufficient to allow me to configure and work in a dual-monitor environment, which was my ultimate goal in all of this, but it certainly isn't ideal.

I've only tried the Matrox P690 and GeForce FX 5200 as they're the only cards available to me here at work, so you might have better luck with another card, but I really think that some of these problems are inherent to the 840.  If you find something that works for you, please keep me in the loop!

I have purchased a 5200 card and although the screen res is OK and dual monitor work the card is extremly slow and very coppy when playing video !!

Its far from ideal and I think it might be conflicting with the Sata controller in the server. do you have these same problems ? I get some artifact but not that many - using the latest drivers straight from the Nvidia website (windows Vista 64 Version)

I am going to try the drivers that came with the card and maybe Windows 7 drivers 64 bit as they might work a litlle better - I will let you know how I get on !!

Yeah... like I said, my experience with the 5200 has been less than ideal as well.  It gets the job done but it ain't pretty!

I've been periodically checking for 2008 R2 drivers for this card and the Matrox card I initially used but so far haven't seen any released for either.  I haven't done any analysis on my PERC controller.  How did you determine that it's running slower than it should be?

Drivers that came with the card will not even install :(

There are no Windows 7 Drivers for this card either !!

It'sbetter than it was but I am concerned that the PERC controller is running slower than it should be ?

I will see if there is anything else I can try and get back to you with what I find (If anything)

I have not done any benchmarks, but the system does seems to be running slower than normal !! In general that it

Video sometimes plays OK but mostly chunks badly - I copied a file over to another hard drive and it worked ok from there initially but after completing more tests it seems that even this is not as simple as I have had problems running video from any drive in my system !!

it works OK for now and as I have 8GB RAM in my system 64 bit is the way to go and I want to run the newest version for testing etc.

I will let you know if I get anywhere with this or find anything else out
