PCI to USB Controller Lost..No USB anymore!

Question

I recently upgraded to W98 V2 from W95. I had not had a problem with my USB devices until recently. I got a message in my Device Manager as follows:

Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller has a problem....

Problem:
The NTKERN.VXD device loader could not load device driver (Code2)..."To Fix use Update Driver"..My problem is that I was unable to use the Windows 95 Intel Support Driver Ver. A00 that was shipped with my system...this is due to the W98 Upgrade is my assumption. The system has worked fine since the upgrade until this past week, when I lost my USB and got the above message in Device Manager.

How do I find...reinstall the PCI to USB Controller and related drivers...I removed it from my system thinking I could reinstall with the Dell software that I had. WRONG!

I also now have a "Yellow ?" next to "Other Devices"
with a sub entry of a Yellow Exclamtion Mark for "PCI Universal Serial Bus".

I am a Senior Citizen and just getting into the meat on some of these problems...Can someone help this old man out??

I have gotten my problem corrected, however I had to do a Format on my C drive and reload all my programs after the format was done...Reloading the W98 CD corrected my problem...not sure about yours but this is what Dell told me I had to do...It worked but sure is a mess...I moved all my files over to my D drive and once the format was done and programs reloaded I was able to move the files back to C...I hope this might help...It can be messy so I suggest you talk to Dell Tech Rep on the phone to be sure your problem is the same as mine...Good Luck...

Thanks for the reply Slofly. That's what I was afraid of, and I think that's probably where I'm headed (a reformat of my hard drive). I plan to contact a Dell Tech Support person today, but my guess is they're going to tell me the same thing they told you. Thanks again.

Chris,

If you have your HD partitioned, then you can move most of your files, etc to say the "D" drive partition. This saves a bunch of work and lost data when you format "C". You will still have to load all the programs back on after the format, but at least you have all the data you had stored in those programs.

Might be a better way, but I am not aware of it...Of course that very often the case...Hope you get it fixed with a minimum amount of stress....Slofly
