Pop-Ups R Drving me crazy

Does anyone recommend any downloads, or any software that will slow down the onslaught I have been getting lately. All I have to do is turn my PC on and wham, there they are. Getting online takes me forever due to the ram the pop ups eat up.

Please help,

If the pop-ups are from Windows Messenger Service (occur without opening Internet Explorer), see the following to disable Messenger Service:

If the pop-ups occur while browsing the web, get a a pop-up stopper.  A free one comes with the Google Toolbar and also gives you quick access to the best search engine on the interet:

Danimal66,

After you download Spybot from the link provided, you can open it in Advanced Mode and use its Immunize feature to lock your home page against changes.

You may have adware or virus on your PC. They are sometimes very tricky to remove from your computer.

Try download the free version of Ad-aware from here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Also you could use a free Anti-virus software like this one: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Another website you might find useful: http://www.grc.com/default.htm

Good luck to you.

If your startup page changes every time you log on you have spyware or a virus on your computer.  Run a virus scan then go to www.download.com and get your hands on ad-aware 6 and spybot search and destroy.  Update their definitions just like you would a virus scanner and that should fix you right up.

Thanks to all that replied, I will try your recommendations. I tried to use Google as my start up page and it did help however, the start-up changes everytime I turn on my PC on. I was thinking of upgrading my RAM to 1024, right now I am only running 256.

internet explorer is your problem.   Try using Mozilla Firefox as your browser, no pop ups and it works just as well (or even better) than IE.       Check it out at www.mozilla.com

Danimal666.

You can use this.

Together with this, the free edition of the following should be more than adequate.

I installed some of your recommendations and the pop ups have just about "left the building". However, it only appears to work on my sign in, when I click on my daughters sign in and log on to the net all kinds of pop ups appear. How can i make the the pop up blockers block not just on my sign but all other users as well.

Thanks,

Dan

Danimal666,

I suspect that Shoot The Messenger is responsible for the improvement in your account. If so, log on in the other accounts and run it there as well.

I've never really thought about it as I'm the only user on this computer but you may have to install the programs and run them on all the accounts to completely get rid of the popups.

My 2 cents:

If person is the Administrator, and uses Administrative Tools to disable Messenger in Services, wouldn't that stop it in all accounts?

(I don't know for sure, I am the Administrator, and don't have any other accounts)

If so, log in as the administrator and Go to:

Start---Run---Type in "Services.msc" (without quotes)

Double click "Messenger" in the list.

Click on the "General" tab.

Look for "Startup type"

Click on the down arrow, click "Disabled"

Apply. Then click on "Stop" OK.

If this don't work, sorry.

Without going back and reading the whole thread....

If you haven't already done so, you may want to disable messenger service. A simple utility to do so can be found here.
