Power supply for XPS 730

Question

Hi,

I'm looking for a new power supply for the 730 XPS so I can run a pair of 280GTX's. I was wonderying if anyone has any ideas of what power supply I can use, or if I can use 6 pin to 8 pin converter's and if so where can I can acquire them. Money is no problem

The 730 comes with a stock 1K (1,000 watt ) power supply. Enough for the two cards which in my opinion zone135 is a waste of good money for about a 30% percent gain in frame rates if you do not mind me weighing in with my opinion. Get the one card, then if games suffer, get another one next year that will replace the 280 as they always do.

My older 8800 GTX card of 16 months ago can play any game out their with the exception of Crysis, and Flight Sim X game. No card, even SLI GTX 280's can play those games at max settings either so give this expensive upgrade another thought unless you have money to burn. Also, there are some games that do not play well with SLI and some driver issues have been reported as well.

You are right as I now remember, but the manual only showed 1K and I could not get my thinking cap on straight.  Me thinks it came with a 750 watt power supply as you mentioned which is good for many SLI cards but unknown about the 280 right now.

Im not so sure about that SR45. I believe it will come with the 1Kw if two vidoe cards are installed at order. If not I believe the standard supply is 750W. And I do not think it comes with both 6 and 8 pin connectors.

Checked a few other forums and some have used a good 750 to 850 watt power supply for two GTX280's and some mentioned it would have to be a good power supply, not one of those fly by night ones.

However, I would not even consider two expensive cards just for a 30% increase in frame rates. Then as time goes by, a brand new more powerful card comes out, just one, that will beat out two GTX 280's as has been noticed with older SLI set ups. Nope. Not worth it plus the headaches

IF I was going to go SLI with two GTX280's I would want at least a 1kw supply. But I am like you the little bit of a bump that SLI gives you, IF the game supports it, is not worth the expense of a second card.

I have a 1k power supply but the problem is it has no 8 pin connector. I was wonderying if you know of any that i can get which have them?? if the 280 needs an 8 pin connector then most of them in the future will probably as well. Can i use a 6pin ot 8 pin converter or do i need  new power suplly with 8pin connectors?

Most of the cards are comming with the 6 to 8 pin adapters. Since you have a 730 almost any ATX powersupply should work.,
