Pre-Installed software on a new Dell Desktop

\i bought a new Dell desktop in January this year and am very pleased with the PC. I have, however, been trying for just 5 months now to download copies of the pre-installed software in case I need it due to the ever present need to format the hard drive. I was sent a leaflet advising me to go to http://downloadstore.dell.com/media

I go to the site and aggree tothe licence conditions. I then have to click Register as there is no other option. I then get this message:

I can get no further. i have tried emailing Dell support but get no response.

Anyone able to guide me on this please?

I have found the quickest way to resolve things like this is to use the Dell Live Chat tech support option. They can't ignore you like they might with an email. It takes a few minutes but I think it is worth it.

Thank you for your response. The problem here is I can only find access to Sales Live Chat and I don't think they could/would be able to help me!

Ah ha! Therein lies the problem. Sorry I didn't catch that you are in the UK. So my answer now is: I dunno.

Sorry.

I guess I don't understand: The Live Chat option-> Go to the support page on Dell.com; Click on "Contact Tech Supt"; Click on Live Chat. You will need to have the service tag handy.

Since you are still under warranty you should be able to use this option.

Let me know if I can help further.

Hi Jeff

Again many thanks for staying with me. I go to Dell.com click on Contact Tech Support and get this page:

As you see no mention of Live Chat. I am on the UK page BTW not US!

Try going to here  https://smartsource.dell.com/Web/Welcome.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fWeb%2fLogin.aspx

to see if your wanted software is listed

Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory!!I guess you will have to find your most comfortable chair, a cold drink and it's off to the wonderful land of telephone support. I do not envey you.

Hi Jeff

Thought that might be the problem but by another very torturous route I did arrive at a live chat connection. Rubbing hands together as one does I thought Ah Ha I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately that turned out to be the proverbial train coming in the other direction. It's called "Sods Law" in the UK. Here's what happened:

Jeff

I might try a letter to Michael Dell! I think if I address it to Michael Dell, Ireland.

It should get to him. I won't hold my breath though. Nice to chat, thanks again, Goodnight. Off to a glass of whisky and a look at the football World Cup Final!

regards from across the pond

That is the only place you will be able to get any pre installed software. I had no problem accessing the site either yesterday or today. Since you are still under warranty  perhaps a call to Dell might be in order

Just as an update. I did manage to email Dell and actually got a positive reply at last. I am to have a telephone conversation today between 5 and 7 pm. Will post the outcome here later,  perhaps tomorrow!

Next episode

Dell rep phoned at 6.30pm. Wanted to take remote control of my PC to "resolve the issue". I have 3 progs pre-installed. MS Office trial, MS Works 9. and Roxio. I need only Works 9 so I said just email me a link to download a copy of Works 9 and I will be happy. he wanted to check my PC over to ensure it was running OK. I said "No Thanks" to this as it was not necessary. 5 mins later get the email with the link. Unforunately it is only the link to more Works templates and an update to make Works 9 recognize Office 2007. Seems like we are back to square one so have given up now and will uninstall Works 9 and load up my old Works  7 which is fine for my needs. Bit much though, I have paid for the rest! Hey Ho! I suppose Dell think they sell so many PC's now that to possibly loose one customer who has bought 17 PC's and laptops from them over the years doesn't matter or that's what I have suggested in my latest email to them!

Here's the latest in the saga. I have found where to download Works 9 on the site sent to me by Dell. Mind you it takes a change of location and four links to get there and then I must pay £49.95! Don't think I will take this route! Have declined the kind and generous offer from Dell. Nice of them though wasn't it!
